I am at Penn but am not really planning on taking math this year....this is my courseload for the year....Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, a Linguistics course, Astronomy, Accelerated Portuguese, a Sociology course, a Writing class, and a World cultures class.....will not having math hurt me in transfer admissions, being that no class at Penn is really a cake walk....?

Depends on the major I guess, as it isn't always required. Still, I think it might be smart just to take at least one class before applying to prove to the admissions people that you can handle college-level math.

Best of luck :)

Most colleges appreciate a diverse course load, particularly from transfers since the first two years are supposed to be the ones in which you concentrate on GEs.

I don't know that it would necessarily hurt you not to have any math, particularly since you're taking Astronomy (is it, by chance, physics or math-based Astronomy?), but it would probably be a good idea to consider taking a class.

Yes the astronomy class is very physics/math based.

I don't think that a math course, by itself, is a big issue, since you're taking a diverse and challenging course load that's prepping you for your non-math-based major (I presume).

The exception would be if you're applying to schools that require everyone to meet a certain math requirement before they graduate. You should be satisfying whatever requirements are imposed on the students at your target schools.

Ditto Hanna. Which is why I asked if Astronomy was physics or math-based. Since it is, I'm pretty sure that unless there's a specific course requirement at the college in question, Astronomy will count for breadth, and you're fine.

i really dont think it wil hurt you, i used to have that image that adcoms are these proffesors attentivly scrutanizing you, dont worry man, i mean as long as your not taking vocationakl courses your good. admins arent gonna say o well bob this guys a real dumb **** he's not taken math. Not a big deal.

dude, how the hell are you taking micro and macro without math?i mean; if you're already past calc thats coo and all, but you should still be taking multivar calc at some point in time..

Micro and Macro don't require a math pre-req, I was just wondering if it would be a big deal, if i were to transfer, to take math after i transfer as opposed to before i transfer and if it would affect my chances for admission. I plan to take math sometime sophomore year thats all.

It depends on the program you are applying to and what their individual transfer requirements are.

Why do you want to leave Penn???

There are a multitude of factors that weigh in to my desire to transfer, some of them are more personal and Id rather not get into them on this discussion board. All around I am just not happy here.

I know from personal experience that Michigan State will not let anyone transfer in w/o math so check with specific programs. Good luck!
