Right now I’m in community college and I’m planning to transfer next year. There are my grade. Also note that I retook the F. So do you think four year college/university will question my F grade, despite the fact I’m a A and B student?

That F is definitely going to raise questions - if you have a good explanation, give it in the “extra information” section of your application. If you don’t have a good explanation, don’t make lame excuses and just try to gloss over it.

Transfers from CC to Brown face tremendous odds already. Typically accepted transfers into most Ivies (Cornell the exception) have HS performances that merited Ivy acceptances but they ended up not attending for one reason or another. Was your HS performance of that level? Did you get accepted to very selective 4 year programs when you were a HS Senior?

Otherwise, make sure you sit down and speak with your CC Transfer Advisor to craft a realistic list of 4-year target schools.

Actually, I got the F for plagiarize on my mid term. IS that a good sign for most college? I was just wondering. Thanks. And, btw, my High School transcript record is atrociously; I wouldn’t ever look at it ever again. EVER again. So what are my chance of getting accepted to a decent college?

Plagiarizing is definitely a serious issue. Most colleges, especially Brown, will look down heavily upon anyone who plagiarizes. In fact, a lot of schools will expel you for plagiarizing.

It was only the last paragraph of the Mid-term. When my professor found out, I admitted to it right always. So do you think, when I transfer, other colleges/universities will look down, and/or question that F?

Yes, colleges WILL look down and question that F, especially if it’s from plagiarizing on a test. Also, you English grammar is a bit unstable, and I hope that when you write essays for applications, you have someone to look over them.

Even though you were honest about the plagiarism and it was limited to one paragraph, I don’t think they will look past it. All universities would have a problem with cheating on a mid-term. I’m not convinced that Brown, as a prestigious university with a reputation to uphold, will admit any applicant that plagiarized a major paper at another institution. I’m going to be honest; it doesn’t look too good for you.

Does this mean my college career is practically over? After all, this record of me plagiarizing will remain on my college record, meaning that when I transfer to other college/universities they will be able to know why I obtain that F in the first place. It was also my first time, so do you think other universities, besides brown university, will overlook that? I am thinking about apply to other institutes likes Notre Dame, Northeastern University, Columbia General Studies (admittance rate is 40%), and Birmingham University etc. Basically, some decent institutes, and nothing too fancy, such as Harvard, etc. I just want to assure that my educational career isn’t over just because on this stupid mistake I did.

I imagine there are some schools that, although they would strongly look down upon plagiarism, would be more forgiving. It’s only a matter of figuring out which institutions those are. This doesn’t have to be the end of your college career, but don’t get your hopes up for any very prestigious private schools. Have you thought about attending a strong public school like UVA, Michigan, UCLA etc? Those schools might give you another shot if you make it clear that you won’t do it again.

Do you know if whether SAT/ACT scores are mandatory for transfer applicants, or are they no necessary? I did really bad on the SAT. That is one of the reasons why I am currently at a CC.

See if I have this straight: you’re applying to one of the most selective schools in the country and wonder whether you can be admitted with bad test scores and an F due to plagiarism at your current college. Id say that if Brown admits you, it would be a travesty on all the students who did not cheat and have really good scores and character. Put another way, why do you get to move to the front of a very long line?

SAT/ACT scores are necessary for freshman transfer applicants; but I believe it is only optional for current sophomores and juniors (this may vary from school to school). I would retake the SAT or take the ACT, if possible.

I would still apply though, however narrow my chances of admission were. You never know, and for all you know they might attribute the F to you being sick or something. I’d rather not speak about it in my application, cause plagiarism raises a red flag. I know its unethical though.

Brown has a long line of excellent applicants every year from which to choose. Transferring from a cc to Brown is already a long shot–add in the F and the plagiarizing and the poor high school transcript and your chances are not good.

To be honest, I’d mention the plagiarism in the Additional Information essay-ette and just pawn it off as a clerical mistake or something like that. Brown just gets too many applicants and you have very low chances of getting in with an honest-to-God F on your transcript with no reason.
