Does Studying for the SAT also help ACT scores

Basically, I've spent the entire summer studying for the SAT. However, I found out the SAT and ACT are tested on different dates. So, I was wondering:
Would be worth it to take the ACT?
Is the CR, Math, and writing sections similar to the SAT?
Is the Essay similar to SAT essays?
Do colleges look down on students who only take one of the tests?

The tests are somewhat similar. I believe you get tested trig on the math section. All selective colleges claim they have no preference.
