Does Taking Care of a Family Member Count as an EC?

Hello, for the UC and Common App, I was wondering if I should list that I took care of my grandmother for the past 5 years at my home. She is too old to live by herself so she's been living with us and my siblings and I take care of her by cooking, cleaning, transporting her etc.

Also, is it possible to list EC that I've done before high school, including medals that have been given?

You generally do not include honors and awards earned before high school on your college applications unless you did something extraordinary like circumnavigate the Earth solo.

Your experience caring for your grandmother is appropriate for an application, but not in the laundry list of activities. You could write about it in an essay or include it in the additional information section.

Within the extracurricular/work menu, you will find a category called “Family Responsibilities.” That category was added this year precisely to address situations like the one you describe with your grandmother.
