I just got accepted to be Staff Relations in Leadership. Does this look good in college applications.? :D (I hope so ~ )

Class as in elective? It will look better than some things I suppose, however you actually having leadership experience in the real world will look much better than whatever a class does on leadership. Then again, I don’t really know what “Staff Relations in Leadership” means or what you do in there, but I would have to think having an actual leadership position and an academic class in lieu of that would be better.

Exactly! This is exactly why having this class on your transcript will not “look great.” Judging the class only by its title, I kind of expect it to be a lot of gobbledygook, with some “team building” thrown in for good measure. Probably better on your transcript than “Office Aide,” but it has nowhere near the gravitas of, say, AP Biology or starting an additional foreign language.

If I am misjudging, and it actually is a course where something of substance happens, you might want to ask your guidance to mention that fact in his or her letter.

Well, staff relations gives appreciation to the teachers, and also helps out our high school.

But thanks for the feedback :)

I don’t understand why that should look great to colleges. Can you help me understand why it might?

Colleges are generally interested in attracting the best students they can. What would this say about you as a student?

Is this some kind of honor at your school? Is admission to the class competitive?

Agree with the other posters. What are you skipping in your academic schedule to allow room for this class?

Honestly, it depends on how active the class. In my school, our Student Government Association(SGA) is called leadership class on the transcript and it is a big deal to get in and they plan a lot of things like Homecoming,Pep Rally’s etc. Being a leader in it is a big deal. But like another poster said, if it takes a lot of work, I would have your counselor clarify that. Then it would be a good EC. I also think it’s just like taking band or orchestra. IT’s an EC but it’s also a class.

@ambitious dreams and Yah dude! It’s exactly that! Leadership is like another school “staff” but we lead the school, and we’re in charge of ALL events. There are all kinds of sections inside Leadership, it’s not ONLY a class that teaches you about being a leader, but it helps the school out tremendously. This class is in charge of ALL events, the money, the community services, checking the clubs, pep rally’s, homecoming, yah you get the point.

I’m in the staff relations section, so my job is to encourage the teachers, and give them appreciation for what they’re doing.

I like the fact that the people in Leadership gets their names imprinted in the school planner and gets red jersey’s with our names imprinted on them. ._. LOL anyways…

@Sirkosky…^^^^

@M mom: And yes, it is rather difficult to get in the class. I had to go through an interview with the student council asking me to sit in the middle, and they pounded me with PRESSURING questions. Two people got rejected, but the rest got in (yay like me :D)

@siliconmom: I didn’t give up any academic class for this. For senior year i’m taking 3 AP classes, Pre-cal, and i’m going to be an academic peer leader (that helps out strategic students) , plus this class. And plus… i’m leading A LOT of clubs o_0, … yah i don’t want to digress any further.

Does it sound great so far you guys? xD

From the way, you describe it, it will look good on a college application. Just describe the time commitment and the activities you do on college apps and you will be fine. :)

haha thanks :)

Actually, that sounds light…that sounds like four academic classes and two fluffy classes.

…can you elaborate more on… “light?”

Pre-cal senior year? Isn’t that like, 2 years late?

As for the class itself, I’d say it has a minimum effect. Taking another AP class would be much more beneficial. Usually people take “fluff” classes like this to get an easy A.

I think it may depend on the colleges or universities you plan to apply to. I doubt that highly selective colleges will be impressed.

I don’t think a school class dedicated to planning Homecoming events sounds very impressive. And, honestly, I think a leadership class devoted to “staff relations” and “[encouraging] the teachers and [giving] them support for what they’re doing” sounds even less so.

I would certainly not make it the cornerstone of my application, nor would I expect any boost from it in college admissions.

That’s what I was thinking. Colleges would be more impressed if you took two tough classes instead of your two fluffy classes and handled the workload. Pre-cal as a senior is like a year late too, right?

… And I always thought taking Leadership was really beneficial for college applications. That’s the whole reason why I joined it. I guess I was wrong. >___< But they already put me in the class, so I don’t know what excuse to say to get me out. My leadership teacher would be pretty ****ed if I quit,

What do you guys think of an academic peer leader then? Do you think that’s worth it? Would it look great in college applications? They are like TA’s, but we help the students more in depth. Each period a day, I’m going to be put in a strategic class to help one of the students individually with their English work.

Hm, I know there’s no way out of Leadership… But if an academic peer leader isn’t that great, i’d either take “advanced bio” or “stats”

They don’t offer anymore AP classes, so that’s the highest I can get.

What do you guys think?

And from what you guys said… I don’t think Ivy Leagues would be impressed ; ~ ;… So I think i won’t try for them anymore.

But how about for UC’s? Would UC’s (like UCLA…) be impressed?

Take your proposed senior class schedule and stop by the college counseling office at your HS. They can give you advice about the rigor of your schedule in the context of your school, and talk to you about typical outcomes from your school.

… The thing is, I don’t like my counselor LOL.

Btw thanks for everyone’s insightful advice :)

That’s why I posted on this forum, so I know what to take, and what classes look best. Would anyone care to give advice now? x)

Advanced bio (or stats)…vs Academic Peer Leader.

Which sounds better?

Any somewhat challenging academic class is better than Peer Leader.
