Hey, so I was mainly going to ask you guys about what the criteria are for the letters about the HAIL scholarship. Several months ago I received the packet with details about the HAIL scholarship if admitted, however my stats really don’t justify U of M actually admitting me (uw GPA is a 3.47, w 3.55, SAT 1270) so I’m curious as to if the HAIL scholarship letter is something they send out in mass to lower income families, or if it means that I actually have a chance at being accepted. I applied EA for the LSA, and although I’m preparing for a rejection or a deferral, I’m just curious to see if they actually handpicked their HAIL scholarship people, or if it really was just a mass sendout.
They send it to high achieving students from low income families, so I think that means you’ll have a good chance. Your GPA doesn’t look too bad, especially if you’re one of the best students in your school.
All the people I know who got the hail scholarship got into U of M. I know 4 people, myself included.
@whizkid98 You are mistaken with the HAIL scholarship. The HAIL interview has no correlation with income or performance. If you applied to the CoE and are in an area in which they have someone that can talk to you, they ask you to go for it. A friend of mine has a household income of 140k+ and had a 29ACT with 3.79 UW. While I am not trying to minimize his academic accomplishments at all, I don’t think UM standards would consider this to be high-achieving considering both stats are below average when compared with their admissions profiles. Like I said though, your description is 100% correct if we were talking about the HAIL scholarship.
I got a phone HAIL interview with a guy in Seattle. I live in PA lol. does it mean anything that they obviously made an effort to interview me? Dont wanna get too hopeful, but…
Most everyone who applies to CoE gets a HAIL interview if they have an alumni interviewer available.
That’s really cool to think I might have a chance! I just don’t know cause my stats are so low. My GPA is pretty bad, it ranks me at 40/88 in my class. But my test scores were really good compared to the rest of my school, top 10 from what I can tell. My extracurriculars also aren’t the best. It’s mostly artsy stuff. I’ve done theater since middle school, paid acting gigs since my freshman year, and voice, piano, and violin lessons since my freshman year as well. I don’t know though, I figure I must have fit some kind of criteria since they sent me that letter. If it doesn’t work out I plan on going to Michigan Tech for a year and transferring. My biggest concern is if the scholarship transfers over if I transfer after my freshman year from MTU.
