I have been hearing mixed things. Please let me know below. What are some other selective schools that don’t consider freshman year grades?
Are you hearing this from a UM source?
I have not been able to find a clear answer on their website.
Lol. How bad did you do? Can you give some context to this like unweighted GPA, any tests scores, major, etc.
So they count all 4 years. Many kids are deferred so they look at senior grades through like Midterm.
But… If you have a rising GPA in Sophomore /Junior year the freshman year will have less weight to them. You won’t find this on their website. But their academic counselors would be more then happy to talk to you.
Michigan really likes and appreciates upward trends. Do that. ?.
Ahaha, pretty bad; but I was a naive freshman. I had a 3.28 and a 3.14 mostly b’s and one c. I had a super easy course load too. I’m glad to hear that about upward trends because the last B I got was the 1st sem of sophomore year.
Great so what is your unweighted GPA now? What major? Highest math /science? Any Aps if so what (also what classes projected for senior year)?.. Then we can give you a clearer guess ?.
I had three honors classes and a dual enrollment course in my junior year. Before that, I had all regular courses. Next year I am taking AP stats, AP Gov, AP Lit, AP Environmental Science. I am applying to ross, but I’d be more than happy to settle for LSA. My current unweighted gpa (including my freshman year) is a 3.65. 33 on the ACT. Pretty good ECs my best consists of being the vice president of a nonprofit (government certified) serving vets. I have a really good common app essay as well. I’m not liking my chances right now
You will most likely be deferred. So you kinda need to A out. Especially with Aps. My son took 6 Aps senior year with Calc 3 and said it was easier then his all honors classes. More interesting due to more depth.
Also see how your school does with Michigan. If instate OK. But much harder if OOS. Ross is great but not the be all for business. If you get in there are tons of non Ross opportunities for business. Many non Ross students go into Business successfully.
Did you take precalc or Calc 1 yet?
No, I have not taken any calc courses, but I plan to the summer before my freshman year. I am out of state, but I def have a shot based on Naviance data from my school. Do you think I have a reasonable shot?
My daughter was admitted this year to LSA out of state with a 3.7 UW GPA and 4.2 Weighted, with a 33 ACT; deferred and then admitted in March. Not far off from you and similar APs. But she was a legacy, so that might have helped her. On the contrary, she was all A’s freshman year and her GPA trended down, not up, including a C in Honors Chem and C+ in AP Calc, both one semester grades.
Write a good essay, maybe see if you can take a community college class or two over the summer to boost your GPA, and you might have a decent shot, especially these days. I think you’re best off applying to LSA.
BTW, she’s not attending.
If you take Calc the “summer” before your a freshman for credit you run the risk of being considered a transfer student. Be careful about this. Even call and make sure. I would maybe look at the AP stats and consider pre Calc or Calc. (I don’t know where your at with math). Even with business you want to take the highest math you can for Michigan. It’s a Calc driven school. It also shows rigor compared to AP stats. You can take AP stats somewhere for fun. It’s considered by most colleges as an essay A AP course without the rigor. My son couldn’t get it during the school year so he took it at Northwestern. The whole year in 3 weeks.
For Michigan it’s about course selection, Rigor of those courses and grades then a great essay.
To answer the OP’s question, NO, UMich doesn’t disregard freshman grades.
I doubt there are very many OOS students accepted to Ross who have not had calc in HS. What math are you taking senior year? What does your HS GC say?
I am taking AP Stats.
Did she take all of her AP’s senior year like me? Does applying to Ross give me a disadvantage? I thought if I was denied I would just be placed in LSA.
Did your son have any APs before senior year? What was his gpa, test scores, ecs, etc?
If you look at the UMich CDS (Common Data Set), the two most important factors in their admissions decision are uwGPA and course rigor, which is what @Knowsstuff mentions above.
Also, as @Knowsstuff mentions, I think your best case scenario is a deferral in EA. And then, UMich will probably want your 1st semester senior year grades. So, keep your foot on the gas pedal and do really well.
It’ll be an odd admissions cycle this coming “season,” so you just never know. I keep telling my '21 kid to expect the unexpected. :grimace:
The OOS acceptance rate is 19% and the middle 50% for the entire admitted class is an uwGPA of 3.9 and an SAT score between 1,380-1,540. OOS students tend to be on the higher end of the class range.
If accepted to LSA, but not Ross BBA, then you have a couple options in terms of Ross Business School. You can apply to transfer to Ross from LSA, but the cross school acceptance rate is 51%. The other option is that Ross offers a minor degree in business.
I don’t think there is any selective university in the country that disregards freshman grades. They are party of your GPA. In fact, for most students they are far more important than your senior year grades, especially if you are submitting your applications in the fall of your senior year before senior grades are even available.
That said, if your GPA is a weakness, most schools will look more kindly on an upward-trending GPA than a downward-trending one.
@stevensmith123 , she took AP Euro Sophomore year, APUSH, APES and AP Calc AB Junior Year, and AP Stats, AP Gov, and AP Comp Sci Principles Senior Year. Also took two community college classes. She is entering ASU Barrett Honors with 24 credits, almost entering as a sophomore. She is in no rush to finish though.
