Does the writing section of the SAT matter?

So I got my SAT results back, and I got a 640 on reading, 650 on math, and a 720 on writing. Will the writing section help me with my other scores?

You must ask every college you’re applying to. I know that several universities don’t care about writing scores -you can find on their websites. Think Colgate was one of them

Depends for each college. If you get a 500 on writing, you can bet that top colleges will not look upon that score favorably. Colleges look more closely at the math & CR, but if colleges didn’t care about writing scores, then why are their middle 50% in writing high? All the sections are important. Few schools might not look at it, but the overwhelming majority of colleges do, so do well.

It won’t “help with your other scores,” and yeah, it’s generally deprioritized and some schools even ignore it altogether.
