Whats up.
So…this summer, I’m going to China with my dad because he has to go teach/do research at a university. Originially, I was planning on getting an internship at NIH, but since I have to go with him, I had to scratch that idea. Anyway, my dad says I can tag along him and his graduate students and help them out with their research. He says this counts as an internship.
So anyway, I really want to have an internship or something worthwhile that I did over the summer on my college app. Do you think [the above paragraph] counts as an internship? It’s not “formal”, it sounds kind of cheesy, but I’ll probably learn a whole lot and get some real experience.
Thanks, and if it does count, any suggestions on how to word that on my college app? (btw, I won’t be apply for two years but I’m very curious!)

That sounds like wonderful opportunity! To study/work/travel in another country for the summer. I would go and make the most of it. I don't really think colleges care if your are in official or unofficial internships. They care that you make the most of the situations you are in. So get as involved as you can in the research, travel when possible, learn about the country/city you are in. And be sure to enjoy yourself, too. (Remember not everything you do has to be for a college application--live life to the fullest, and you will be fine.)

Your dad is doing this work at a university right? And you speak the language? Perhaps there is a way to connect with someone at the unversity and expand what you are doing, that way, maybe you can get a more formal internship and it all won't be for Dad, which by the way, i have no problem with. Keep a journal, take pictures, get everyones names. If you plan now, you may be able to set up something with another professor there!!!

sweeeet =) thanks for the info. Susantm, yeh I know college apps aren't everything, but I just want to show colleges how much I really did without making it sound like b-sing. anyway thanks everyone.
