I am currently a sophomore in high school, and I am going on a 1 week volunteer trip to Bay St. Louis Mississippi this summer with my church to aid in the rebuilding of the area destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Should I include this in my college application? It will add up to over 150 hours of community service, but is it relevant enough to be put on there?

I'm sure it is, but I just want to make sure. Thanks for any and all help!

If your application asks about summer activities in high school, then this will be included. Common Application does ask for summer activities. Otherwise, in a year and a half when you do apply to schools, it might be part of an essay if appropriate. If this is the only community service you have during all of high school, that might be a problem. If this is part of a pattern you have of community service, then that’s what a college will see.

yeah…during my 1 week summer volunteering thing, i worked 12 hour days, and that was 60 hours (12x5 weekdays) so unless you’re gonna be pulling all nighters…

and i did put this on my app (additional information section, i think…) because i thought it was significant. i wrote my commonapp essay about it too, because i learned a lot from it.

How can you possibly get 150 hours in one week? Are you going to work for 22 hours a day? You’re not serving the community by eating out and sleeping, you know.

Anyway, isn’t there a limit for the total amount of hours earned in one day? I think it’s something like eight, meaning that even if you work every day for the absolute maximum amount of hours, you’d still only get 56.

Sorry if I sound agitated, but I work for over a month every summer and get near 180 hours.

Sorry guys, I don’t know what I was thinking. I just did 24x7 without really thinking to get the hours up there. Yeah, it will only be like 60 or 70 hours. But that’s irrelevant; I just wanted to know if it goes on or not.
