this pass week was course selection and these are the cases i wanted to take:
Honors Biotechnology III
Honors Biotechnology IV
Honors BioInformatics
AP Calculus AP
AP Chemistry
AP Literature
AP Statistics
AP Micro or Macro economics (Either one are easy)
I have to take my 3 bio classes my ap chem and ap calc class and I love stats so Im taking that.
But my mom used her parent veto power in student course selection and is forcing me to take a slacker regular weighted class
Introduction to Psychology/ Introduction to Sociology for my social science. But in my high school career my social science classes and final grades where
Freshmen Year: (Regular) Local State & National- A
Sophomore Year: (AP) United States History - B
Junior Year: (Honors) World History - A (So far but i confident it will stay)
And then senior year she wants to play me in a low level class just because she doesn’t want me taking 5 ap classes and SHE personally found economics hard when she took it 30 YEARS ago in college. Doesnt it look bad to college admission that i don’t continue the weighted trend for my social science classes. Plus I really wanted to take an econ class but she saying no and she’s completely taken over my courses just like she did last year. I might be able to work something out with my counselor and put me in ap macro or micro anyways but I don’t think shell do it. What do I do?
First: No. It won’t look that bad, considering you already have a lot of Honors and APs, so one class that is not weighted is not going to kill you.
However, I do recommend you taking economics (they don’t have a regular class? You can’t compromise with your mom?). Economics is helpful, and if you like it, it’ll be an interesting class. My high school requires all students to take it to graduate, but regardless, you should still try to take economics.
But in the end, if it doesn’t work out, no, that class will not kill you. Some universities want to see a variety of classes, anyway, so taking a sociology class (while not very helpful . . . ) is not going to be detrimental.
@luvskat No we only have AP micro and AP macro. And no she literally does not budge at all like no use arguing with her. And I really do wish I could take economics for a little diversity and to learn about it my senior year. And thanks for the it’s not bad but it’s kind of good but at the same time not really good answer it made me laugh
Here’s the truth: AP Econ is a very valuable class. It certainly isn’t as hard as high-level college economics (which, by the way, your mother needs to understand that what may be hard for her may not be hard for you). However, not continuing your weighted trend will NOT kill your application. Colleges accept students based on who they are and what talents they possess, and not on whether or not the student takes a harder course load every successive year. There is so much more to your application than your classes.
If I were you, I would schedule an appointment with my counselor and talk about the situation. Ask him/her for any input on taking 5 AP classes and your situation with your mom. Your counselor will know more about the classes than your mother, and he/she is the most qualified to give you the best advice for your senior year (you need to be sure that you can handle the workload of 5 AP classes). If you really want to take AP Econ, you should try to find a way to work it out — your mom shouldn’t be able to control and repress your desire for a certain interest. But if it doesn’t work out, keep in mind that not continuing your weighted trend will not destroy your chances whatsoever. Hopefully this helps.
Thanks that really does help a lot and I’m gonna go talk to my mom about this one more time to see. I really do want to do an AP Econ class. At my school there two separate classes ins read of one class. Plus intro to psych/intro to soci is for slackers and I really really want to be a winner. But I guess it would be nice to have a slacker class my senior year with 4 AP classes in which 3 of them are full year college courses and 1 is just a semester compared to what I’m doing now: AP bio, AP eng Lang, AP enviro. But that’s honestly a good question maybe I could go talk to the Econ teacher tommorow and see if I could go get his support on the issue. He’s pretty lax and chill so perhaps if he could personally reassure my mother that I would be able to take his class. Then that could work. @azwu331 And I feel like I could do 5 AP classes since it’s all classes i want to take and not required like APUSH was
