does this look weird?

does it look strange if i put down that i earned 3k on my css, but i also put that i'm not filing tax returns?

No, as a tax dependent of your parents you can earn a little over $6k without having to file taxes. However, if you had any tax withheld by your employer you would want to file to get that refunded to you.

@annoyingdad would it look weird if i say im not filing taxes, and then i actually do? My mom isn’t sure whether or not we should file the tax

No. It does not look weird. Happens all of the time. My kid made $3K last summer and didn’t have any taxes withheld so won’t be filing any return. Doesn’t need to do so.

If you had taxes withheld you should absolutely file tho. I’m sure you know that.

Yes, that would “look weird.” And it would also be dishonest, if when you answer the question you have a pretty good idea that you will be filing.

My kids always file their taxes, even though they don’t have enough incomes

but i actually dont know whether or not i will be filing

It will not take you very long to file your taxes, and it isn’t very difficult when you have a small income from a part-time job. It is in your best interest to file - as you will be receiving money back that was taken out of your check. Wouldn’t you want more money?

but wait, i don’t see how this is bad. If i report my income on css, and i claim that i won’t file taxes, but then i actually do, no one is getting hurt and no one is winning.

I don’t think it would look weird. Your final, final package is based on your actual tax returns. As long as you report the income accurately, I don’t see why a college would care. The main reason you might decide to file would be if they withheld taxes and you can get them back. Then it is worth it.

Look at your most recent pay statement. Has any money been withheld throughout the year for either federal or state income taxes?* If yes, you will want to file a tax return, either because A) you owe no taxes and want the withheld money returned to you, or B) you owe taxes and must file a return. If the answer to the above question is no, you can easily estimate whether you will owe taxes based on the amount of your income this year (or projected income, if you are still earning money in 2014). If you think you will owe taxes but haven’t had any withholding, say that you are planning to file. If you think you will not owe taxes and you haven’t had any withholding, say that you are not planning to file. If your only income this year (earned and unearned) is the $3k that you mention above, it is very likely that you will have no income tax obligation this year.

*Be aware that payroll tax withholdings for FICA (Social Security and Medicare) are not the same thing as income tax withholding.

I am under 18, and my total income is less than 3k, i dont HAVE to file tax correct? just want to make sure

Is it W-2 income or 1099 income?

Probably not, but I’m not going to give an absolute answer without seeing all the applicable numbers. (And no, I’m not expecting you to share all the applicable numbers.)

Use this IRS publication:

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p17.pdf</a></p>

Yes, it’s for 2013 tax returns, but it should be good enough for your purposes. Look at table 1-2 on page 6.

Please answer this question: Have you had any income tax withholding from your wages this year?

wait, if i don’t file for taxes, do i still have to include that income into my tax statements? like do my parents have to put it under untaxed income? and yes, income tax was withheld

If income tax was withheld and you don’t own any income tax, it would be silly not to file taxes to get that money back. It belongs to you, but if you don’t file a tax return, the government will keep it.

What do you mean by “tax statements”? If you are asking if you have to report the income on financial aid forms even if you don’t owe any income tax, the answer is most definitely YES.

You need to report the income, and you need to report it as YOUR income on the college forms, even if you don’t file taxes.

not for college, but like in general, do my parents have to report my income to the irs even if we don’t file?

No. If you are not required to file a tax return, there is no obligation on your part or that of your parents to report income to the IRS. BUT- anyone working at a regular job will likely have their income reported to the IRS by their employer.
