Does this sound pretentious?

One of my recent college application essay ideas covers my discovery and exploration of quantum physics. The basic idea is to showcase my intellectual curiosity through one of my recent passions. Plus, quantum physics is freaking amazing, so it's really easy for me to write about it. ;)

Anyway, I was worried that writing about quantum physics might sound a little pretentious. Quantum physics is a notoriously difficult subject, and I'm afraid some readers might think that I was trying to impress them with my academic prowess. (This was not my goal, in case any of you were wondering.) Is this a valid concern, or should I feel free to write about quantum physics?

Not at all. If you write it well, you can really show your passion in physics. Just watch your tone to avoid sounding pretentious. Good luck.

Agreed with above. Definitinely showcase yourself, and don’t just focus on quantum physics. With certain things, you may have to simplify it or not be too technical. My friend from two years back answered the UChicago essay “Where’s Waldo” using quantum physics and the time continuum. He credits it for the reason he got waitlisted and thought the admissions people liked it. He applied out of a complete crapshoot.
