Does top 10% still apply?

I'm a hs senior now, and top 10%, texas resident and all that. I turned in all my application stuff on time for the fall 2009 deadline, except for my permanent resident card. I have to appeal, and so theres a slim chance of me going in the fall.

I was wondering if the top 10% rule applies if i do my fall semester elsewhere and try to transfer into UT for spring?

I don’t think so, I think it only applies to fall freshmen applicants. I could be completely wrong though.

Besides, the Texas legislature voted to change the top 10% rule pretty recently, so it won’t be as tough to get in.

The top 10% rule only applies to Seniors applying for fall admission. This is probably getting changed in the next couple/few years.

And ‘micina’ said if they got rid of it it wouldn’t be ‘‘as tough to get in’’, that is not really truthful. It could be even harder to get in. Right now it is literally not fair because highschools across Texas highly differ academically. Now if they only let the top 4-6% in, that 7-20% still probably would like to go to UT. So now, instead of just GPA, extra curricular and such with play a larger roll in admission.

If you want to use your top 10% status for automatic admission, you’ll have to apply for the spring semester and NOT attend any college in the fall

I agree with muffler; I think that if you really want to go to UT and the appeal does not work out you could apply for spring, take fall semester off, and start in the spring.

I’m not considering taking fall semester off at all honestly. I am top 4% though, so if the rule doesn’t apply, my hs rank will still be taken into consideration though right?

No HS rank or work, aside from transferable college courses taken in HS, are taken into consideration for transfer students. HS rank and work is only considered for new freshmen who have not attended college before(except for dual-credit classes in hs or coursework approved by UT).

From an admissions counselor:

"if you are not admitted to UT for Fall 2009, you can complete an application for freshman admission to Spring 2010. If you graduate in the top 10% and submit a completed Spring application by the deadline, you would be automatically admitted at that time.

…because top 10% offers automatic admission for Freshman, you would not be allowed to take college course work in the period between high school graduation and your enrollment at UT (you do have the option of submitting a written request asking to take coursework in the interim period but it is not guaranteed to be approved)."
