Does transfering to a College resets the good GPA?

Hi,

I am currently attending Georgia State University, its my sophomore year with a GPA of 4.0 and I am thinking to transfer to Emory University. The reason being that I would have good research medical colleges in reach, if I maintain my GPA at Emory. That being said, I’m not so sure weather it’s a good idea to transfer or not. I’ll be grateful if someone puts some light on that too. Nonetheless, what will happen to my current GPA? Will it reset or will it stay same corresponding my credit hours that I’ve taken?

Thank You

When you go apply to medical school, AMCAS recalculates your GPA using grades from every college-level class you’ve ever taken, including any dual enrollment classes taken during high school. The resulting AMCAS GPA/sGPA are the ones med schools look at.

At Emory itself, your GPA will re-set and it’ll be your performance at Emory only–without any regard for your previous grades-- that will determine your eligibility for Dean’s List and honors at graduation.

If you are happy and successful at your current college, think long & hard before you decide to transfer. If you do transfer you will need to wait until after college graduation to apply to med school because it will take time for you to find your place at the new school (find research labs, develop relationships w/profs for LORs, adjust to academic expectations, etc). Also if you want a health profession committee letter (strongly preferred by med school admissions), Emory requires you to present at 3 semesters of grades AT EMORY in order to qualify for one.

So weigh the pros and cons–and make your decision.

I should also mention that when adcomms look at med school applications, they consider grade trends. Your grades and GPA will be broken down by year so it’s easy to see at a glance. A steady or strong downward trend is a big red flag for med school admissions. That will hurt not just your chances for an admission to a top med school, but to any med school.

Make sure that if you do transfer, you can still maintain the same or nearly the same GPA at Emory as you do at your current college.
