Does U of Texas Austin give good amounts of aid for out of state students.

The school I really want to go to is UT Austin but the out of state tuition is really high (like $40000) and on top of that I also need housing. Do they give good aide? I'm going into engineering, any other schools that are known for good financial aide?

Ut gives preference to Texas kids;
I believe that only 10 % of slots are reserved for OOS students from the remaining 49 states and internationals; so figure your odds. engineering is probably the hardest to get into, and forget about fin aid. So, if u get in u will pay full retail rate of OOS tuition which is close to some high end private universities. It’s also very hard to establish residency at UT. The only way is really if your parents move there and then wait a year. Looked into it, since my husband went to UT and we love Austin.

Well that sucks, it really looks like a good school. Don’t know if its really worth the $50000 a year in total to go there though. Why do I have to live in Arizona?..

Matt,

Publics charge high OOS rates for a reason, your parents aren’t paying taxes there. It wouldn’t make much sense for those schools to charge high OOS rates, and then give your financial aid to cover those high rates. Why bother charging the high rates.

Plus, Texas citizens don’t want their tax dollars paying for OOS students.

Texas, Florida, and some other flagship publics have to severely limit admissions to OOS students because their primary purpose is to educate the children of residents, and they don’t have enough seats for their own state’s children.

However, there are some other OOS publics that want more OOS students and will give you merit scholarships if your stats are high. Those can reduce your costs if your stats are high enough.

What are your test scores and GPA?

Don’t know if its really worth the $50000 a year in total to go there though

No, it’s not.

What are your parents saying? How much will they pay? If they won’t pay a lot than the question about expensive schools is moot.

To give you some idea what the situation is like at UT Austin in terms of meeting need, about a quarter of the kids, in and OOS got need met fully. So, no, I don’t think so.

Arizona has some highly desirable state schools. I know more kids from here going to UA and AState than to UT Austin. In fact, I’ve never seen that school on anyone’s list from here. The only kid I know who went there from here did so because her father took a job with the university and they moved there.

My ACT is 29 and GPA is a 4.03 weighted, 3.88 in weighted. The biggest reason why I want to go OOS is to get out of the regular routine. If I go to the U of A, its going to be high school all over again (see the same people, live at home). But it looks like the only option as of now. My parents can probably pay $10000 a year max.

Well, retake your ACT and try for a better score. Also, take the SAT and practice for both of them.

Ask your parents how much they’ll pay each year.

BTW…you could go to AzSt, right?

Yes I could, but I don’t really know how good their engineering program is. I’ll take a look!. Also I took the SAT and did bad (1800). I will be retaking them ASAP.

Matt, have you considered any of the WUE schools yet?:

[Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) | Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education](Save On College Tuition | Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE))

Tuition is generally 150% of IS, but you need to check the college websites for current information and details.

Arizona State and Arizona are comparable for engineering, and both are quite good.

So its not worth going out of state then? Also, I’ve never seen the wue program, thanks for recommending that!

Matt, much will depend on how much your parents will pay.

How much will they pay?

If you really want away from Tuscon and don’t mind a small school, consider New Mexico Tech–excellent engineering school in a small town. (Socorro, NM–pop 10,000, but it’s only 90 minutes from ABQ. There is a daily shuttle the runs between the 2 towns.)

Ranked by Kiplinger’s as a “Best Value” college.

Your ACT puts you into the eligible range for both competitive and WUE scholarships

Scholarships for non-residents here;

You’d likely be able to attend for instate costs which are ~$13K for tuition, fees, room & board.

[Tuition and Fees](http://www.nmt.edu/tuition-and-fees)

I’ll be sure to look into it! Thanks!

Matt already stated above that his parents will pay 10,000 a year.
