I am out of stater and did apply for their scholarship but didn't receive any. I applied for biomed and Plan II and got accepted into both programs. Right now going to UT will be a matter of how good the financial aid package is. Do they give decent amounts of grants and scholarships in the package? Thanks.

Did they say that you wouldn't receive any scholarships or are you just assuming they won't give you any? I talked to the Financial Aid office yesterday and they told me decisions on Financial Aid will be made in April, late April even. I'm also Out-of-state, I hope I get some aid, it's my #1 school and I took a year off just to reapply cause all the other schools I applied to the year before sucked :X

Hey are the award packages going to be made AT LEAST before May 1....come on UT is my #1 school but this is riduculus.

Engineering sent me a letter telling me that I didn't get anything. No assumptions here.

Oops, what I meant was scholarship applications would be looked at throughout, could even be late April :(

FAFSA is bein looked at late March for Loans, Grants and Work Study

So UT doesn’t give generous financial aid… can anybody hopefully refute this?

^ Nope. UT is pretty stingy with its money. Not much money for NMFs now either…

^What’s NMF? I heard for OOS students, if they can get a scholarship of $1000, then they will get you in-state tuition. Is that true? But that still means you have to pay about 11-12k. Wait, does that mean that admissions are not need-blind?

National Merit Finalist. I’ve heard the same thing too, but I’m not really sure if it’s true…

I also heard UT was stingy, but I got in my opinion I got a great aid package this year - 10,728 in grants for they year (400 which is a scholarship). I also received 6,780 B-on-time loan, which will be forgiven since I will certainly meet the requirements for loan forgiveness. Assuming someone meets those requirements (3.0 gpa + graduate in 4 years) then the b-on-time loan basically turns into a grant. I also received some stafford loans in a small amount which I didn’t have to accept at all, but I did for any unexpected expenses and rent I may face this year.

^ How did you get all of that? Is your EFC really low or something?

Yes I have an EFC of zero and and my special circumstance is an exorbitant amount of medical bills for one of my parents, exceeding over 100k out of pocket.

^ Wow. That pretty much covers almost your entire cost of attendance (you need to pay ~2k a year or so, right).

Wait, are they known to transform OOS tuition into in-state tuition? Or is that just a myth?

Does it make a difference if you get into honors? And are their admissions need-blind?

I accepted about 6,400 in loans for the year, not including the b-on-time loan which should be forgiven.

“Wait, are they known to transform OOS tuition into in-state tuition? Or is that just a myth?”

If you get a scholarship over 1k, or some other criteria, you are reduced to in-state tuition, regardless of financial need.

My dad is unemployed and they gave me $550 a semester.

In other words: quite stingy.

I think your EFC has to be under 10K to get any significant financial aid

^ What if your parental income is below 10K and you get 0 in tax returns? Just wondering.

That would probably be a 0 EFC, I’m guessing.

The loans on hhloans.com (including BOT) are only for Texas residents. Would you happen to know which programs/scholarships are good for OOS applicants?

Unfortunately I don’t know anything about how UT awards aid to OOS students or what programs and scholarships are best. I’m sure many other OOS students can help you with that question.
