Does UC Blue and Gold Plan Cover Dorms?

Hello everyone,

Sorry to make another post so soon but I was looking of the cost of attending UCI or UCSB and they are both very expensive. The sites say this for living on campus:

UCSB: $31,994.00 (Cost of Attendance - UCSB Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships)

UCI: $29,425.00 (Costs: Transfer Undergraduate Students)

I should quality for the blue and gold plan because my parents are making less than 50,000 a year. If I get blue and gold plan will I get enough money to pay for one of these schools including the dorm? (My parents are not helping pay for anything so it is all on me.)

Also does the blue and gold plan count loans when they say "they" will pay for expenses?

Im 99.9% sure that Blue and Gold only covers your classes and fees not housing. You’ll need to take out loans, or get a job for that.

first, you know its 80k right? not 50k.

but no only campus fees, i.e. tuition and the other fees.

im guessing you get that “gift aid” for the housing and things. take out some loans, etc.

Really? That sucks, it’s at least 12,000 and I have to pay around around 5000 in loans and make up the rest?

what is “it’s”?

Blue & Gold is a pledge the UC makes to ensure you have money to pay for the college fees. Only few UCs have actual money set aside for Blue & Gold. The UC is just watching to make sure you got enough money to cover fees and that money could be federal or state financial aid or any UC grants/scholarships you qualify. If you still owe some fees after all the money has been applied, then the UC coughs up whatever is short to help you cover the fees. But remember Blue & Gold only promises fees, not books or dorms. For more information, see [University of California - Blue + Gold Opportunity Plan](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/paying-for-uc/financial-aid/grants/blue-gold/index.html)

With the exception of the few UCs that dedicate money to Blue & Gold, you may not get any money marked “Blue & Gold.” If your federal and state financial aid offers enough money to cover your fees, the UC is not obligated to give you more. But if you are low income, you will most likely qualify for more aid (UC is usually generous in terms of aid for low income families). Most of my low-income students get full-ride grants or close to full-ride grants to the UCs.

“it’s” meaning “it is” meaning I have to pay at least 12,000 for housing some how (loans probably if I can (I don’t think I can)). That sucks so much! I think because of money problems I may just end up going to CSUN which I hate so much. Man, I wish I weren’t so poor.

oh housing is 12,000!

lmxao according to what mssun said, we will be looked after well my friend.

(if you guys ever wonder why i say lmxao, its because i got a “warning” for putting the lmao. odd… oO)

From the stats I’ve seen, low-income students usually get a bit more than the 15k that covers tuition. It would still be a good idea to save up a few bills now.

I swear if I get into UCLA, I’m going straight to the Jungle. I have a couple of friends near there so it won’t be so bad. Don’t want more than 7-8k in debt when I walk out of uni.

Wow, no more than 7-8, I could never do that. But just one more question if someone could help, does it matter if I TAG UCI or UCSB when it comes to getting extra money for housing? In other words, who do you think will help me out more with the fees and housing. (Like I said, I’m broke, make no money and my parents make 50K with 4 kids in the house.)

s&t, just apply regular admission. what is your ethnicity? the TAG won’t help get more money, just Guarantee admission to the school.

which school is your main focus? I’m sure the pricing won’t be that much different, remember too UCI costs more so the amounts will vary according to COL.

Any less, I’ll welcome it with open arms. I’ve never owed money to anyone, don’t know what to think of it. Ah well…

I don’t always get into debt, but when I do I make it count.

I would apply regularly but I bet I would be turned down because of a low GPA. I just make the TAG requirement at these schools.

Also I am white so I won’t be getting any special scholarships for that so I’d have to work a job for extra money in addition to loans for housing and food.

i think working on campus would be fun, it kinda contributes to the whole college life experience.

@UCkittychen - work in the library and stay away from the cafeteria jobs (otherwise you’ll never want to eat there, or anywhere else for that matter, ever again).

thanks for the advice Ms.Sun!

Blue and Gold takes care of your institution fees only, but if you have enough financial aid to cover the housing fees then you may end up with a very small balance each quarter. At least that’s what’s happening for me at UCD this quarter.

does the aid money come to our house in a check or something?

You might also get about $5,000 in grant money from the Pell Grant.

@movingunit for UCD, all financial aid you receive is applied to your account first, so any outstanding bills are taken care of and paid. Financial aid only mails checks/direct deposit if there is any left over money. Though in my case, I didn’t have any left over aid.
