Does UCAS require recommendations?

The title speaks for itself: Does UCAS or British U's require teacher recs from American students!!!?

Also, how competitive are the 5 year medical programs for American UG applicants!?

Yes. You need to find a referee to write you a reference.

Re med school: Are you doing the IB? If so, it will be just as competitive as it is for British students, possibly slightly more so, as there are strict international quotas for British medical schools. If you are only doing AP, you should email the schools to which you wish to apply; I know certain med schools do not regard APs as sufficient preparation for entering med school.

Would you want someone who has known you for 5 years, but not as much about your academic strengths or would you ask a person who has known you for a year and knows your strengths better?

Academic strength. The UK schools wants to know more about how you will succeed in your chosen course and why you are suited for it than that you’re a wonderful person who saves orphans in their spare time, etc.

How does the predicted grades work for the referee? Do they just right on their reference that this student will get these grades?

How will my referee be able to predict which grades I have if he doesn’t teach those classes?

Your referee should ask your other teachers to predict your grades. And your predicted grades must be entered into your UCAS form.

So should I ask my teachers directly since you mentioned it was on the UCAS forms, or does my referee put my predicted grades on his recommendation for me?

Your referee fills in your predicted grades; it is on his/her part of the UCAS form.
