so i got a 2300. of course something to be VERY proud of. but it was boosted by a 780 writing. now, does writing REALLY matter? in other words, should i take the 2300 for what it is, or should i simply look at my score out of 1600 as a better indicator of my chances at certain schools (solely in respect to SAT scores). should i retake this 2300 (or this 1520/1600)? and where does this put me...do i have a chance at the top schools with this score (i know everyone has a chance, but do i have a reasonable chance?)

Of course writing matters. Your chances are not based just on your SATs. Add up your SAT IIs, GPA, class rank, ECs, and hooks. Can't hurt to retake it, either.

this provides a rough idea about which colleges equally weigh writing, partially count writing, and completely disregard writing.

I think colleges are starting to look a bit more at writing than they did at first.

the link didn't work =(

The writing matters in that if you fail it completely or ace it, the colleges will notice. other than that, they don't seem to care that much, probably because its new and there really aren't any hard data on it yet. however, i think a 1520 out of 1600 is still very respectable. If you check out a college's website, there're usually data about the incoming class average SAT scores, so you can see how you measure up to students who actually got in. if you fall comfortably within that range with only reading and math, don't sweat it. if not, take them again. (though i would say that if you did "poorly" on math and well on reading, just take the sat II in math. I got a 760 on the SAT math section but an 800 on the IIC, so i didn't have to take the SAT's again to make up for the math.)

good luck!

YES, WRITING MATTERS!!! it was actually a past harvard president that suggested that there be a writing section (i think, something like that, sorry if the info. is inaccurate, but im pretty sure that's how it goes).

i see, i see. yea i think i'll retake, hopefully i can improve somehwere. although i doubt i'll improve in writing, 780 in writing was a really good score for me and im kinda surprised lol. thakns for the help, i think i need to do more researcchh!
