does yale have singles for dorm rooms?

and on that note... what is the majority of yale rooming like? is it with 1 other roommate, or more of a suite style living? can you request singles if you dont want to share a room?

thanks :)

“Freshmen live on single-sex floors, in single-sex suites made up of a common living room with attached bedrooms that accommodate between four and six freshmen.” I know that the bedrooms can be either singles or doubles, but I’m not sure how they decide who gets what. If you go to the “Yale Cribs” link on the admitted students page, it will show you some floor plans of suites.

You can’t request a single. It’s randomized – you’re assigned something. Every college has some “physcho singles” for malcontents who can’t get along with anyone. But you’d have to be quite a screwy person to be moved to one of these in your Freshman year.

FFB: part of Yale is getting to know others. The suite living style is cornerstone to that.

I had a sgl BR in a suite of six my freshman year, I had the dbl BR in a suite of three my soph year (but my roomie lived in his GF’s room so was never home – I had the BR to myself basically), I shared a dbl BR in a suite of five my Jr year and I had a single in my suite of eight my last year. Basically 3 out of 4 years, I had a single.

Yes, most freshmen live in suites. However, there are a couple of colleges who room freshmen in stand alone doubles. I’m in Calhoun and a couple of girls are in standalone doubles in Bingham C. However, the vast majority of freshmen live in suites, as everyone else has pointed out. For the first year, room assignments are random.

Once you move into your colleges, you get to choose who gets which room. Also, at that point, you no longer live exclusively on single-sex floors. (At least, I’m pretty sure of this.) I know some people in Calhoun who have floormates that are of the opposite sex. But, I think it just makes it all the more exciting.

Drbigboyjoe, don’t forget I called to get the single next year in Calhoun!

^ Haha, we’ll see. I say we get a room with all singles (if that exists).

Then again, it’s mostly up to luck… I hope we get a good room draw number.

Whatever, all i know is that I called the single. ;)

After freshman year, it’s more what your college offers. Stiles and Morse have a lot of singles.

In the remodelling of Stiles and Morse, it was determined to decrease the no. of singles and cobble together suites. When ES and MC were built in the early 70s, the thought that privacy was good. After years of lagging behind the other colleges’ suite experiences, the mostly singles experiment has been rescinded. yay suites!

^ Indeed. Although Stiles has very spacious rooms. However, I think I do prefer the suite-style better

I didn’t realize that was done. Thanks for the info. I agree that suites are better.
