<p>At my school it was just first semester. Which makes sense because you need to prepare speeches and such before semester grades are finalized.</p>
<p>At my school, it was the whole senior year (excluding finals). In fact I was the valedictorian but I was only officially notified the Monday before graduation.</p>
<p>As the first two responses demonstrate, Val policies vary by HS. Ask your HS GC.</p>

<p>Just the opposite for D2, she was in the paper as Val and so everyone thinks she is, but she got a B her final marking period and graduated as a Sal.</p>
