Does your teacher recommendation have to come from a teacher that taught you?

I am applyting to UGA and Common App - Columbia, Emory and NYU. They all require teacher recommendations and I have asked my school magazine sponsor in which I am Editor in Chief of to write me a recommendation for all of them. She has never taught me but sees my ability more than any other teacher that has taught me because of the the extensive time we both put into the magazine together. Would the colleges accept her recommendation letter even if she has not taught me? They are out for Christmas currently so I can not call and ask.

anyone have any idea?

I don’t have an official answer, but I’ll share our experience with you. My son asked two of his class teachers to write recommendations. Because he works closely with another teacher at his school who advises a club in which my son is a very active member, he asked that teacher to write a recommendation as well, but we considered that to be a bonus one.

Yes, it does–almost always, if not invariably. Colleges that want recommendation letters want them from teachers who can discuss the manner in which you do the job of being a student. This makes sense, because “student” is really the position that they’re considering you for.

Most colleges and universities wouldn’t mind an additional letter from somebody who can talk about your character out of class: a boss, a mentor, a coach, or this teacher who sponsors the yearbook. But that should be, as fosterte suggests, a supplement to the letter(s) from teacher(s) who’ve taught you in an academic class (usually that means English, science, math, social studies or foreign language), and not a replacement for such a letter.
