Hey everyone,

I was lucky enough to be accepted by Berkeley and Yale, and I have a problem in choosing which school to attend. My dilemma here is that Berkeley offers the major I wish to study (Nutrition), while Yale does not. But the thing is, Yale offers its students the ability to form their own majors. So what should I do? No doubt it would take more work to form my own major, but is that really a reason to turn down Yale? If it makes any difference, I live about half an hour away from Berkeley, so going to the east will be a huge (and welcomed) experience. What are your thoughts? Thank you!

You should look into whether Yale has enough classes in the sort of things that would make up a nutrition major to be viable for you. You can find course listings online at [Yale Online Course Information | Search Courses](Yale Course Search | University Registrar's Office)
I’d love to help you more, but I have absolutely no idea what a nutrition major entails, and I imagine most other Yalies won’t either.

My friend has a similar conflict, about Biomedical engineering at Princeton, which is far away or at UMich, which is right next to her house.

I would ask myself a few questions. How certain are you of your prospective major? How deeply do you want to explore it? What, exactly, do you want to do with it (eg: pursue a career with bachelor’s degree, go into medicine, get a masters, etc.)? How important is it to you vs. the things that attract you to Yale?

Best of luck in all you endeavor. Or just go to Berkeley and free up some spots for waitlistees ;).

Thanks for your responses!
