So lately I've been interested in joining an EC but it's a team and it costs like $900 and there's a major commitment with practices a few days a week and competitions. I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to handle the schedule because I didn't want to be distracted from homework; and I'm doing honors classes next year. Schoolwork comes first. I decided not to even try out for fear that it would take away from my grades.
My friends said if you have any doubts don't do it...
But, my questions to you CC is...
Anyone here manage to get perfect grades in AP or IB and still participate in a major committed team? If so how do you do it?
And, do you think I made the right choice or should I have tried? How could I manage with these classes?

P.s My schedule for next year: (freshman schedule)
honors 9 english
honors 20th century studies
honors accel. earth science
honors accel. biology
honors algebra II
orchestra
intro to programming
intro to theatre
japanese 1

I still don't know... my mom says that I'll be too sore to do homework but I think she just thinks the whole thing is stupid and that they're charging too much money...

Wait what exactly is it that you will be doing, and does the $900 include all expenses including travel, uniform food, etc....if not you're getting jipped.

$900 covers everything: uniform, pom poms, bags, trips to competitions.
Except you still have to pay 20$ a month.
And they say the coach's are underpayed...
Makes me wonder where the 20$ is going...

What is that? Cheerleading or colorguard? I'm on marching band this year and we play around ~$50 for dry cleaning uniforms and t-shirts and stuff, though if you're buying your own uniform I can understand the price.

How far away are the trips? We spent an add'l $500 to go to NYC this year for competition.

And FYI, for first quarter [marching season] I got 6 A+ and 2 As [w/ 6 honors classes and 2 electives], so it's definitely doable, but then again my school might be easier. My teachers were also pretty easy-going this year. If I had gotten some of the teachers my friends did, I doubt I would have done as well. Extra credit helped a lot as well, as did lots and lots of studying.

Your schedule is pretty easy, so it won't really get in the way. I took those core classes this year (freshman), except Alg. II since my school doesn't really offer the opportunity to get ahead. I've been programming since I was 10, so intro to programming sounds like they're probably going to be teaching some crappy language. And your others sound like electives.

But I wouldn't be too sure about your EC. You should find a local team and join them. And if you're trying to make your high school team, and you're just starting cheerleading now, you'll probably end up on JV (most of the girls I know on JV did the exact same thing).

If you're paying $900 to join, I doubt they're going to make you try out. It's probably a "pay-to-play" kind of thing.

It's a tryout and if you make it on the team you have to pay 900$ expense.
And it's A SCHOOL TEAM!
x0may yours sounds cheap! Yah I live in oregon. Salem to be exact.

There's no reason not to just tryout then. You'll probably get a better feel of how much you'll enjoy it, and then you can decide whether or not to make the commitment and pay $900.

And don't worry about getting "perfect" grades. Get good grades, yes, but don't overwork yourself to the point where you devote your entire day to studying. High school is so much better if you have some fun too.

Definitely try out. DO NOT! DO NOT! limit yourself! The only reason why I can to try out is that they only take like a certain number of girls and no waitlist, so you'd be taking up a spot/ruining choreography (this happens on the dance/cheer teams at my school, so basically you are blacklisted for "just seeing").
