What's Donlon like?

***s. ***s everywhere.

Ignoring all the misinformed posts about Donlon, I will say that it was a very good place to live this past year. It has a rather ridiculous reputation as a “party dorm”, but the RA’s were actually fairly stringent and did a good job responding to disturbances. Overall, the building’s layout tends to promote more social interaction, but by the end of the year you’ll notice that people have settled into their own groups/cliques/clans/etc. That’s expected with just about 90 people per floor though (except the first one of course).

The rooms themselves aren’t very bad. Perhaps they are a little small compared to some other buildings, but certainly nothing to be afraid of. Donlon’s rooms are mostly doubles and each floor has two singles and two quads. Almost everyone you meet will have a roommate, and thus know someone from the start. You’ll probably wind up meeting other people, as folks tend to go out together very early in the year.

As for Donlon’s location, it’s pretty decent compared to some other dorms. It’s right across the road from RPCC and not too far of a walk from Appel and Helen Newman. It’s somewhat deep in North but not nearly as bad as the townhouses in terms of the distance to Central Campus. The bus stops are close enough, too.

Donlon is one of the more social dorms just because of the way the building is physically set up. The exit stairs are right across from the common room which also happens to be right in the middle of each floor, so you get a chance to see all your floormates a lot. I lived in Donlon freshman year and our floor basically had two giant friend groups that encompassed at least 70-75 of the 90 people on the floor.

For some reason, it’s always very social / a party-dorm. Although the RA’s do try to control the noise/distractions, it’s very foolish to study in your dorm room if you live in Donlon - however, Donlon does have a very nice library so it should be okay. Overall, Donlon is a great place to live in your freshman year.

it’s always the “social” dorm be cause there are so many people and it’s the most like a typical college dorm (doubles, hallways [not suite style or the hallway suite style they have going on in the newer dorms], big communal bathrooms). there are more people around so some of them are bound to be social.

Donlon RAs do tend to be on the stricter side though. For example they actually do enforce quiet hours. when it’s not quiet hours the morgue is also an excellent place to study.
