Don't you hate the teacher that just gives ridiculous tests

This is more of a rant than anything else.

My English 11 teacher just throws tests at us. She's been teaching for a long time (30+ years) so in class she always talks about personal things with us and we never ever work. Just watch movies, order food to eat in class, GOSSIP, etc. But we walk in and she just throws a test at us to take. A class of 30, maybe 2 or 3 pass with a 70-75 and everyone fails.

How do I deal with this?

She sometimes gives extra credit or something where we show up to a school play or something and get 5 extra points on our averages or something and she always gives points for little things so it's easy to get point.

But what do I do about the problem? Should I complain?

So she just gives random pop quizzes? Are they based on material that you learned? If it is, just always be prepared by studying and reviewing the material before going into class. Not a good idea to complain. She might end up not liking you and make the class more miserable for you. You just have to deal with it. Or if you can still change class schedule, try changing into another English class.

I have a problem with a teacher that gives ridiculous tests as well. My AP Enviro teacher gives us tests on information that does not come out on textbook/crambook/lectures. There is no way to prepare for his tests. I don't know how I got an A in the first semester.

A temporary solution to your problem would be to simply stay in her good books. It looks like here way of grading is totally arbitrary.

A lasting, and more prudent solution would be to confront her about this problem. Point out in a nice way that she's totally sc***ing you guys over, and that instead of just hanging out, she should teach.

We would read a poem for 5 minutes then spend the rest of the period talking about the football team. The next day we got an in-depth test on that poem about the figures of speeches, the theme, how the poem relates to the author's life, etc. which we don't talk about at all.

Yeah, I'm going to try to talk to her personally more so she likes me.

Today, she spent the WHOLE period talking on her cell phone. ALL 40 minutes.

are you SURE you don't go to my school?

happens everywhere-just do the work on your own and ace those tests/quizzes

once upon a time someone invented Sparknotes for those who had crappy english teachers...and we all lived happily ever after. ;)

But it's a random thing. I can't use an hour to study for a test I MIGHT take for an English class when I could be studying for an AP Bio test which I know I'll take.

If it's a random test, just expect it and study. It sounds pretty easy to me, I mean, one poem. It's not like a huge test over a Shakespeare play.
