Dorm advice?

Hello, I would be happy if someone could please give me their opinion on what I should do.

I am going to a local private college. I applied for the honors program and was rejected due to grades (well I was told to take on honors course in the fall then reapply close to the end of fall so they can talk to my professors). The main benefit of the honors college is that they get their own special dorm.

This dorm is really quiet and as a "great community." The issue is since I did not get in I won't get to get into the dorm automatically. The only two left are the all male dorm (which I heard is sorta a party place as all the frats have one corner up and down that they use), and the other a really run down place that smells and is just horrible.

Long story short, I was placed into the really bad dorm. I was told by the head of housing that I can switch to the all male dorm, or wait and see if there is any spots left in the honors dorm (I would find out late July).

I was thinking just to keep things simple and have time to get to know my roommate I would just switch into the all male dorm, but I'm really nervous what type of environment it will be. I am NOT a party person, I'm one of the nerdiest and recluse people there are.

Any advice?

Keep in regular contact with the Housing Office about openings in the July dorm. Be proactive and communicate with them about why you think this would be a good fit. Chances are, they are still processing all the housing requests from the incoming class. Make sure it is you (not your parents) who communicate with the Housing Office.

If you feel very strongly about not living in either dorm (the all-male dorm or the dingy dorm), is their off-campus housing available? Would commuting be an option?

Worst case scenario, embrace the challenge of living in less-than-ideal condition as part of the “college experience”. You will have some great stories about your freshman year roommate/floormates by the sound of it. Ear plugs will be helpful as well.
