huh? it is?

how is cedro? I know its a frosh dorm, but is it co-ed or single sex? How is the social life there (parties or more quiet)? I heard that it is in a relatively good location on campus...true?

Cedro is a pretty good place, when I was a freshman it was crazy, but that changes year to year. It's co-ed, 2 floors of single sex, one floor mixed. Pretty good location for freshman.

can anyone tell me about serra house? i.e. social scene, amenities, etc.

same as above for loro?

Serra is part of the Stern dorm complex. I'm not a huge fan of their food, but Wilbur is really close so you can always just eat there instead. Serra is right next to the middle of campus. All the upperclassman living there will have singles, so they may or may not be that social. It used to not be a very popular place to live, but now that all the upperclassman live in singles (freshman still have doubles) it became much, much more popular.

Loro is part of FloMo. A lot of people like the food there, but I really don't (which is a problem since I'll be living in another dorm in FloMo next year!). It's actually a pretty cool place I think. It's also a four-class dorm. This past year I had a couple of friends who lived there and it seemed like a pretty social place. No huge parties or anything, but the people in the dorm seemed to get along well and be friends with one another. There's a HUGE room on the first floor that's a triple (three people in the room) that used to have four people in it. There's a lounge with a TV, ping pong, and maybe some other stuff. There are also the catwalks which are really cool that connect all the dorms in FloMo, which I think are on the second floor. The location is actually pretty good. It's right next to the row, the most popular place to live on campus. East and west FloMo are very different. East FloMo holds all the students in SLE plus some upperclassmen. West FloMo (where Loro is) doesn't have anyone in SLE. People jokingly make fun of SLE kids, although really no one cares if you're in SLE or not.

All dorms should have a kitchenette with a microwave, oven, stove, and refrigerator, although if you want a refrigerator you should buy or rent one once you get to campus. As far as I know, they all have a piano and a TV too. Most of them have other fun stuff like a pool table or ping pong table, although this varies from dorm to dorm. They all have a central lounge. Dorm rooms in Wilbur, Stern, and FloMo are pretty much all the same size and virtually all one room that you'll share with a roommate. Rooms in Branner have two rooms that three people share, and are of course a bit bigger. In Roble you'll share three rooms (connected) with three other people. Some of the rooms in Lagunita housing for freshman are a bit smaller than the rest. There are a few that used to be singles that are now doubles. Otherwise it's pretty much the same everywhere... In terms of dining, Lag dining is probably the best quality (although people tell me the dining hall by FroSoCo is the best, it's just too far so I've never been there!), and Wilbur has the best selection with good quality. Stern isn't so popular, yet close to Wilbur so people just go there, and FloMo is generally thought to be pretty good even though I'm not a huge fan. Manzanita and Branner dining I've heard aren't always so great, yet again both are near Wilbur. Food in the houses on the row (no freshman will live there, unless you're in the Native American theme house) tends to be pretty amazing, so I highly recommend making friends in those houses and inviting yourself over for dinner :)

anyone know of Granada?

talk about Larkin please :)

many thanks, marlgirl!

Granada is in Lag, so there's a pretty good chance you'll have a smaller room. It's a four-class dorm. I don't know tons about dorm life there. The closest dining hall is really good though, and Lag is close to the main quad, and especially close to science classes. It's also right by the dance studio, which I must admit makes me a bit jealous ;)

Larkin is in Stern. Stern isn't the most gorgeous dorm complex on campus, but the rooms are (in my opinion) pretty spacious and Larkin probably has more or less the best location on campus. It tends to be a very social, fun dorm. I hear great things about it from those who were in the dorm the past couple of years. Oh, and it's all frosh.

thanks. :) how many people are in Larkin?

also, what's Branner like? that's where a friend of mine is...

Branner is two-room triples, and it's a very large all-frosh dorm (close to 200 people). Nice rooms, and a very elegant dorm. Branner, Larkin, and Cedro all have reputations for being kind of crazy, especially Branner simply due to the huge number of freshmen living there.

what about rinconada? crazy/quiet? coed/single sex floors?

how about J-Ro?

from the facebook group, it seems like Larkin 07-08 is gonna have some alcoholics...lol jk jk. Well, I hope theyre nice and accepting since I'm a bit on the shy side and it's almost impossible to change (right?)

Rinc and J-Ro are both all frosh dorms that each have 2 single sex floors and 1 co-ed floor. They both tend to be pretty social places. The one J-Ro RA I know is really, really awesome.

Larkin is awesome. I lived there my freshman year and had an amazing time. There's 100 freshmen in 2 buildings (each 2 floors) connected by a "breezeway." It's kind of hard to explain, but trust me, this is definitely a good layout for a dorm. I also know some of the staff members in Larkin this year, and you're definitely in good hands (even though there are new RFs [Resident Fellows], but they seemed cool when I met them).

And sbc1234, I'm not sure if you were joking or serious in your post, but I can say that I was in a very similar situation to yours 2 years ago, thinking "oh god, I'm going to be surrounded by alcoholics..." when I looked at the Larkin 05-06 facebook group. I'm also fairly shy, but as long as you don't eat your meals in your room every day during orientation and go to the various dorm activities during orientation week, you'll be fine.

Also, the 2 Rinc RAs that I know are cool people, so whoever said they're living in Rinc is very lucky.

can anyone tell me what Okada is like? I know its a four class; how many freshmen are usually put there?

Tell me about Soto please! All I know is that it's in Wilbur. :)
