Dorm Beds

How do I make them more comfortable? I basically wake up tired everyday and as the day progresses into the night my eyes turn red. This does not happen at home where I can sleep in my own bed and past midnight my eyes will still be white. I have already put on memory foam and comforters but it does not really help. What can I do about the beds?

Your mattress is probably worn out. I know that in DD’s rooms some of the mattresses have been better than others. Try flipping the mattress over next time you change it and flip it end to end as well. You might just ask housing how to get a new mattress if you really think that yours is worn out.

If your eyes are red its probably more than a worn out mattress that is the problem. It sounds more like allergies. You might try getting some hypoallergenic mattress/pillow covers and washing your comforter in hot water.

Red eyes? I agree with rocknroll - probably more than a worn out mattress…maybe dust mites. I’d ask for a new mattress. All they can say is no. If the answer is no, try as rocknroll suggests. My daughter has a feather bed topper. Not sure if that would help you if you have allergies, but she swears her bed is very comfortable and she sleeps great.

Are the mattresses the extra long singles or regular single length?

I’d suggest a hypoallergenic mattress cover (it keeps out bed bugs too I think) and a memory foam mattress pad. Make sure they’re for extra-long mattresses.

Thanks for the suggestions.

A mattress topper really does do wonders. I have a memory foam one that has made sleeping in the dorms soooo much better. My bed is way more comfortable than my floormates’ and it was the best purchase I made for sprucing up my room.

TitanMom - they are extra long singles

Thanks for the info!

Sounds like you already haven the topper/memory foam…so try a harder bed . You may need to put a piece of plywood under the mattress for more support. Can your parents gat this delivered to you?

This is what I sleep on, I am a Sophomore and have been having issues with Pitt’s beds since Freshman year. This is my third different dorm and all the beds suck:

I think it’s worth it for you to make a doctor’s appointment to see what the problem is. It’s kind of off-topic in the Pitt forum…

I have a relative with the red eye problem. It was allergies. Even if you do not have allergies at home you could be allergic to something at college. It could even be from the pesticides they use for exterminations which you were probably not subjected to at home. I suggest a good allergist the next time you are home to do some testing…it could at least eliminate a problem. Good Luck
