Dorm Guests?

Are we allowed to have friends/siblings come stay in our dorms as guests? I know that at the schools my friends are going to (west coasters) that they are allowed to have a limit of guests stay over per semester.

Does Columbia do that?

I from the West Coast so everyone I know is from over here. I have a John Jay single too.

Yes, you’re allowed to have overnight guests. The security guards don’t usually care. Just make sure your roommate’s okay with it.

In my experience, this is patently false except for a few of the West Campus/Barnard dorms. The John Jay security guards, especially, are rude and sometimes stop just short of being openly hostile…if they even acknowledge your presence to begin with. (Unless you are a cute black girl and/or are from Jamaica.)

But that’s neither here nor there…

To answer your questions: yes you can have people over, no there is no quota per semester, yes there is a limit to the number of people you can sign in at once, no I’m not sure what that limit is and if it is static for all 4 years of school.

You are allowed to sign in five people at any one time. If you have someone staying overnight (or longer) and you don’t want to sign them in all the time, you can go to the security office in Low Library and get a guest pass which will get them past security without you signing them in. These expire after three days. Other than the five at a time limit, there is no quota. A few security guards won’t care, but that’s rare at freshmen dorms. Although, how you’d fit more than two people in a John Jay single, I don’t know.

I’m from the West Coast, too. And I had a John Jay single my freshman year and it was a good experience.
