For those of you in college could you please do the honors of telling me a bit about dorm life. I heard Harvard dorms are really nice. And dorm or fraternity house? Do you get to choose your dorm or roommates? How many people in a dorm? As you can see I am clueless.

get into harvard. then consider its dorm.

Wow I was only wondering, but erm… ok.

It’ll vary wildly by school. For my school, it also varied within the school. If you’re curious about Harvard in particular, perhaps you should post this in the Harvard forum.

Well from what I have read previously, Harvard (or is it Yale…) doesn’t have a traditional dorm life. They have huge suites where a bunch of people (maybe like 5 or 6) share a common area. This is different from the traditional set up.

Traditionally, a dorm will be a double room (so for 2 people) in a building with anywhere between 400 and 800 students. Usually there is a huge bathroom nearby for your gender.

You don’t usually choose your roommate because you would have to know people prior to going to your school. This is why most people let themselves be assigned to a room by the school but if you had a friend from high school that you wanted to room with, you can do that.

Greek houses are much different, usually they only house between 20 to 40 people in double rooms and the amenities aren’t as plentiful.

orion12 pretty much hit the nail on the head.

As an incoming freshman, you’re most likely going to get a random roommate sharing a double room. You’ll be with a lot of other freshman in the same hallway, and in the middle of the hall there should be a large communal bathroom.

Some schools have nice dorms, some don’t. And each floor also have a common area with like a TV and other stuff. Some might also have a kitchen.

And dorm or fraternity house?
Frat Houses are for people who are in the group. There’s a lot of responsibilities (for my school). There are pretty much no restriction for dorms.
Do you get to choose your dorm or roommates?
You should be able to choose your dorm, but may be limited because you are a freshman. You should be able to live with who you want to be with.
How many people in a dorm?
1, 2, 3, 4…that all depends on what kind of room available to you.

Totoro if you want to take a peak at Harvard’s dorm, read The Ivy, a gossip girl Ivy version. It’s written by two Harvard students and u’ll get to know about Harvard’s dorm life. FYI :)
