Dorm Life

whats the dorm life like?? my friend went greek so he says the parties are great as well as the people. I dont really want to go along that road, so it will differ for me. I wish bing had an overnight stay program, which i dont think they do. What are the parties like?? are they big parties like other big schools with random people?

I dont know that many people that are there currently so i really dont know what to expect. I visited there and my tour guide was a nerd in my opinion, into drama and the arts etc. not my kinda person so her views differed from mine.

I know orientation over the summer is overnight, so we at least get to check out some dorms then.

Each community has a different feel to it and there are two different styles of living. You have suite style (which is like a mini-apartment minus the kitchen) - each suite consists of 2-3 doubles, a common room and a bathroom for the 4-6 people living in that suite. Then their is corridor style which is like what you imagine when you think of college life - a floor of doubles and a floor bathroom. Newing and Dickinson are corridor style while Hinman and Mountainvew are suites. CIW is a combination of both.

Wherever you are placed, you will find people to hang out with (GUARANTEED!). I lived in Hinman for two years and I loved it. I am a junior now and live off campus but my best friends on campus lived on my floor freshman year. I am still involved with hinman events and actitivies and i don’t live there anymore. Each community has a different feel to it so if you visit you have to go and check out what you feel most comfortable in.

You will experience dorm life when you stay in CIW for orientation but it is not exactly like what living in a dorm is. I mean it is but it isn’t because you don’t have all your stuff there.

Having lived in both a suite-styled dorm and a corridor-styled dorm before, I would have to say that I prefer living in corridor-styled because there is more interaction among hallmates. Also, suites can be quite anti-social; you can easily find a majority of your hallmates hiding behind closed doors, leaving no interaction. In my opinion, Dickinson or CIW would be good choices for freshman. In summer orientation, you will have the opportunity to live in either Hinman (suite) or CIW (corridor or suite), though it will be random.

CIW - In the woods, corridor and suites, fairly interactive and good community
Dickinson - Older community, all corridors, and friendly - great place to meet people
Newing - Another older community, not very popular - Greek life and partying is all there, far from academic buildings
Hinman - Older suites and closest to academic buildings - I’ve seen a lot of Asian frats there
Mountainview - Newest and nicest suites - probably the most anti-social community on campus (besides apartments …) - literally gives you a “mountain view”

Is there any way to request a corridor within CIW? I saw it and loved it but I’m not fond of suite-style, at least at first.

Unfortunately there is no way of requesting a corridor room or suite in CIW. And in response to what rhianna said, i lived in hinman (suites) for two years and knew everyone in my building so it will be antisocial if you make it antisocial. If you try to make friends and be social you will.

I haven’t gotten an email yet…

you can go to reslife.binghamton.edu for more information on this. This would be the office you would need to contact to find that out. You can also contact the admissions office.
