dorm photos

S. will be moving into a suite this fall and I'd like to see photos of the layout. The tiny sketch on the ResLife site isn't doing it for me. Is there a link to photos of every dorm?

Which dorm is he moving into? Maybe someone has a personal photo they can point you to... somebodynew posted a pic of his room last year (in Denton, I think). As far as I know, the Reslife floorplans are about all UMD has that is "official". I assume you enlarged the floorplan? I found it pretty helpful (for St. Mary's)

Here are some shots of my St. Mary's apartment (1110 if you want to compare to a floorplan)--I didn't take photos of the kitchen because suite style rooms don't have them. Disclaimer: the messy bedroom isn't mine lol.

@ somebodynew: Looks decent. This is definitely better than a traditional style residence hall.

ResNet say that we'll come to know about our dorms on the 12th of August. I want to be in an apartment now... hehe... Whats the possibility that they place a freshmen in an apartment/suite?

If I recall correctly, the suites are for upperclassman, so I would assume ZERO. Remember CP has an overcrowding issue and not enough dorms, so just be thankful to get any dorm ;)

somebodynew, do you still have pics from your freshman year room? It's a much more realistic view! (Although D is thrilled to be heading to St. Mary's in the fall; it's the Language House and requires being able to interview--and live with roommates in a language other than English!) The orientation guides have a great living environment in the summer, huh?!!!

Most freshmen should be prepared to be living in a high rise with air conditioning only in the lounges, and sharing the bathroom with lots of others!!! A few will get lucky and end up somewhere with A/C, but I agree with b-and-pima above.

Thanks!!! Note: girls' rooms will have about 500% more "stuff", haha.

A quick question: What sort of stuff (furniture) do we already have in the dorm rooms?

Someone was telling me that the dorm rooms are completely empty, and that we have to bring in everything including closets, tables, beds and mattresses :S

lol I know we get more than that...you get a bedframe with a very uncomfortable mattress, a desk, a desk chair, a chest of drawers, and half a closet. Literally half--the room I stayed in for orientation at Queen Anne's hall had a closet and there was a wall smack in the middle dividing it up into two parts. Definitely bring a mattress pad, though--I couldn't sleep a wink and neither could anyone I talked to.

Oh, don't use the rooms in QA as the prototype of the closet--the closets in the high rises are much bigger. VERY Tall.

Example--don't mind my freshman roommate doing an impression of his professor.

@somebody: Get us some more photos will ya?

They guaranteed me an air-conditioned dorm. I had sent a doctors note for that. So they said that you are all set with an air-conditioned one...

Most of the Traditionals are non-AC, correct? So I have more chances of getting in an apartment/suite?

Freshmen who are given A/C res hall rooms are often put on a floor in La Plata Hall together...but Cambridge I think just got A/C, so you might be placed there...either way, it'll still most likely be a traditional high-rise residence hall.

Also, I can't get any more photos of a high rise room because I don't live there anymore haha.

@somebody: Can you shed some light on the bathroom/toilet issue?

If the profile of a traditional residence hall says that the number of people sharing the bath is 33, then is that limited to shower only?
Or are 33 people supposed to share the toilet, commode, basin and stuff?

There are 5 shower stalls on every wing for the 33 or so students, and about 5 bathroom stalls (and some buildings have urinals too)...in my entire freshman year, I NEVER had to wait to use a stall or shower.

Just logged in to 'Student Login/Housing Forms' on Department of Resident Life at The University of Maryland, College Park, and this is what it says about my Fall 2008 housing;

Building Preference
Apt/Suite style

Housing Codes
A/C Hall, New Freshman, Comm Grp 1, WEB INSERT

They've put Apt/Suite style in my room preference, even though I never requested for that :)
A/C Hall looks guaranteed :)

Can someone tell me what Comm Grp 1 means?

Commitment Group 1 means first-time incoming freshman, which means you are guaranteed housing before all the other commitment groups.

does anyone else status says "Our records indicate you are not registered for Fall 2008.Our records indicate you are not a full-time student for Fall 2008."

@mutual: Yes.

Thats because you still haven't registered for classes...

hmm mine only says "New Freshman, Comm Grp 1" while everything else is tba. i didn't even know we could have preferences for a/c and type of building.

just curious, did you confirm enrollment really early? because i did the housing agreement on like the last possible day haha, so maybe that's why my account has no info?

also, is it too late to email them and tell them about changes in preferences?
