I applied a couple weeks ago to UT Austin but since I'm not top 10%, I have to wait a couple weeks before I figure out if I got in. Should I wait until I get in and then apply for housing or just go ahead and apply right now? The thing is, I don't want to have to apply and waste $50 to figure out that I didn't get into UT.

That depends on how much you want to live on campus, and how picky you are about which dorm you want. The longer you wait to apply for housing, the lower you will be on the list. As expensive as college is, $50 is not that much to risk. Remember, this will be your home away from home for 9 months!

I agree with QueenofEverythin. It is just a fact that to get “in line” to get a dorm or your first or second choice that you apply for housing as soon as you are notified that your app is complete. This is changed somewhat from the policy in efffect for 2008, but we applied for housing earlier and were able to get San Jacinto, my d’s first choice. Considering the total cost of housing in Austin $50 is expendable.

I’m sorry, I’ve seen this a lot, but what exactly does “my d” mean?

I would just go ahead and do it. I wish I had last year. Instead, I waited till I got my admissions decision on May 1st, and ended up getting Jester (which isn’t as bad as they say). It’s worth it in the long run, especially if you can spare the 50 dollars right now.

M-5, ‘d,’ ‘s,’ ‘ds,’ ‘h’ et cetera are just acronyms used by parents on the site to refer to family members (my daughter, my son, my dear son, my husband, and so on).

If you are rejected from UT, I am pretty sure they will give you your $50 back. I’d advise you to apply for housing.

They will not give you your money back if rejected by the university.
