Dorm Questions

Is Smith dorm air-conditioned? I don't think so, but wanted to check. If not, what type of fan do you recommend? Are you allowed to put fans in the windows? I didn't see the dimensions of the window on the webpage that shows the room and furniture dimensions, so I'm not sure what size window fan to get.

Also, when are you allowed to start receiving mail? Is it possible to mail packages to yourself so that they are there when you arrive on freshmen move in day?

Thank you.

Hi! None of the dorms are air conditioned. Good choice on picking Smith though-- I lived right next door in Taft last year and those 2 are out of the way and are definitely the best 2 freshman dorms! I’d recommend a few small Target fans. They are pretty powerful, even the plastic ones, and I just kept them circulating all the time! My dad had bought me a huge one but it didn’t fit and just wasn’t worth the space so we returned it… the small ones work just fine! Yes, you are allowed to buy a box-fan (the square ones) for the window, I just never did because I get a little claustrophobic so I like my windows open! All the box-fans are the same size, and all the dorm windows are the same size too!

Yes, you can have packages mailed to yourself (like textbooks, or if you are having your belongings shipped from the West Coast) starting the week before you move in… so I’d say, don’t order anything before August 1st or so. There won’t be anyone in the Wade/Fribley offices to process the packages until the staff start coming in about a week before move-in! Hope this helps!

Do you know how many boxes we are allowed to send ahead of time? Is there a limit? On move in day where do we go to pick up the boxes?

I also have a question about family weekend that hopefully you can help me with. We have to make hotel reservations for that time and I was wondering do the parents come for the whole three days? I know that with orientation they have the same activities going for the couple of days. I am trying to schedule the time off from work and it would help if I knew if we were going to be there for the whole time or if we came in on a Friday and stayed until Sunday. Thanks.

As far as I know, there is no limit. Do be mindful of the fact that all freshman AND upperclassmen send their packages to the same small mailroom, and the beginning of the year is a very hard time for the mailroom staff! If you do mail several boxes, be sure to pick them up in a timely manner!

Most parents who come from out of town (including mine from Philadelphia) come for the whole 3 days, since it takes quite a while to travel to Case and back home! My parents and I didn’t really even participate in the activities Case had scheduled, but we did go to some museums, do some last-minute dorm room shopping/food shopping I really needed, and ate off campus A LOT! If you are scheduling the time off from work, I’d definitely try to maximize it and come to Case for as long as possible since it is quite far for so many people! Hope this helps :)

Thanks. I was thinking the same thing this morning. I am trying to think of everything he will need but I will be back in one month so anything we may have forgot we can always pick up then.

We will try to get as much as we can in the car but we definitely will have to mail some things. I hope we will be able to find the mailroom to get everything on move in day.

You will! Not sure what house he is in but Wade Commons is pretty centrally located between all of the freshman houses so you should be able to find it easily!
