Dorm Questions

How wide are the closets in Landis/Gilchrist Hall? What about the dresser?

How wide/long are the desks?

How tall are the ceilings?

Thanks in advance.

I can’t give you dimensions, but I can tell you that when I took my DD to her audition in February, we took a tour of Cawthon Hall, and I was surprised to see that the dressers were the exact same ones I had in Kellum Hall when I lived there in 1985. I thought that was funny. Anyway, I don’t think there is much difference between the closets, desks, etc. between dorms. There are other things that are different, such as the bathrooms, between a suite-style dorm and a community-style dorm (which is what Kellum is), but the things you mention are the same. You’ll get to see them when you go to orientation, so bring a tape measure with you, if you really want true specifics.

Thanks.

Also, is it possible to have an over the door shoe rack?

Hmm, not sure about that, but probably?? Go to the earliest orientation you can go to (are you in-state?), and that will answer all your questions. We are out of state, and so my daughter will have to go to orientation in August, but that’s just the way it is. Maybe someone else who lives in a dorm now will answer your questions.

Okay, I just looked at the pictures of the two dorms on FSU’s housing page (did you look at those - do you know where to find them?), and it looks like the closets have doors, which is what I’m pretty sure I remember from my college days, so an over-the-door shoe rack should work.

I did but I don’t know how wide the doors are or if the hanging parts will still allow the door to close properly. Thanks for the advice!

My sonis in wildwood and even though the closets have doors, the hooks we bought to hang towels would not allow the door to close. You stay in wildwood for orientation, so may be bring one or two types with you and see if they work. Going to an early orientation is also good for registering for classes. You register on the last day after meeting with advisor and obviously the earlier you do this, the more open classes there are.

Some doors are hung tighter to the frame, you can’t tell until you get to your room. We had no problem with our smallish but adequate Landis closets (and the bathroom door) closing normally with organizers on them.

Ceilings were normal height, and we had low, 3-drawer dressers which could fit under the raised beds. Some other halls have taller dressers.

I remember in Wildwood I had something that fit the closet door perfectly, and the door wouldn’t close correctly because the hook I had was too tall. The closet doors there don’t have much wiggle room in the way of height.

I mention it because I believe that most of the suite-style dorms are similarly designed. I know the closets in Wildwood were something like 3 feet wide, about 3 feet deep, and around 8 feet high. I could be way off on those measurements as they’re just from memory.

The dressers in most of the dorms are around 3 feet high, almost the width of the twin bed, and their depth is something like 18" if I had to guess. The dressers are the perfect dimensions for sliding under your bed in the dorms to help save room. When I was in Wildwood my bed on the highest level just barely allowed for some wiggle room with the dresser underneath.

Stantonmom, they told us at preview that wasn’t true. They do not release all the classes for the first orientations to choose from. Rather they release them in batches giving everyone the same chance.

oh, okay - we had a very early orientation - beginning of June and I thought that some of his friends who went much later didn’t get specific classes they wanted - that may have been coincidence or maybe they just couldn’t get the “section”(time/day) they wanted but still got the class. If you have the option, I would still go sooner rather than later. Once home, we were still able to go online and switch out a class for another.
