I had a question about dorms. I heard dorms cost alot more than apartments.

I don’t know a whole lot about it, but there are few apartments on campus. And those are pretty much always filled, and priority is given to incoming freshman last. And typically, yes, they are cheaper than dorms.

They said on one of the tours that those apartments are for upperclassman or for students after freshman year. They also said there was an essay and interview process involved. Idk for sure…but i don’t think those are an option for freshman.

your best bet is to find an apartment off-campus. Believe me, even the upperclassmen are fighting for the very limited spots for on-campus apartment, so the chance for incoming freshman is like zero unless you know someone who’s already living there and can move in with him/her.

I was just wondering if you can take the stuff out of your dorm (bunk and desk), so theres more room for fun activities?

You can but just leave your bed(sleeping bag etc…), because if you have a mauli there, then you cant …and ask ur roomy too

yes you can loft/bunk beds in your dorms. And to the OP, there are no on-campus apartments for freshman but even the on-campus apartments are pretty expensive. around the same price as the dorms. If you live off campus at apartments you save a lot, but i really recommend meeting more people in the dorms during your first year here

Primero grove is pretty cheap for an on-campus apartment, except that most people have trouble getting in. They reserve certain spots each year for junior transfers.

which dorm is the best in your opinion? and when do we apply for housing? sorry its probably a dumb question, i still havent submitted my SIR yet. ill do it tonite

Dorms do cost a lot more than apartments but its the experience virtually…what you are paying for. I stayed in tercero my freshman year last year (south so I was lucky to be in the newer buildings) and even though I admit it was expensive, I made the experience worth while. You never really get to live with random strangers that become friends throughout college (and maybe life) all the time.

The dorms all have pros and cons. Tercero South is obviously newer and has the best DC food, and is closer to alot of the classes that most freshmen take classes in - sci lec, giedt, etc. Yet there is the occasional cow smell. Segundo’s DC is always busy. And by that I mean always. But Segundo is usually where most students want to live - or that I’ve seen. Cuarto is off campus (you could bike/take the bus though) and a lot of people like the suite style arrangement so they prefer to live there.

oh kool thanks eightonesix. i was lookin at the 3D images for all the dorms on the site but they are diff from the one i saw at segundo when i visited. are they supposed to be accurate? the one i saw at segundo was realy nice, it was a double and the room was evenly divided (by that i mean that the room was symmetrically placed). i really like that but that style isnt on the site. i dont remember which dorm i visited at segundo

Haha theres the newer part of segundo and the older part. So depending which one you visited you may have saw both parts. The newer halls are Thompson, Alder, and I forgot the 3rd one. They are closer to russell blvd and the end of campus. The other ones such as bixby gilmore and such are the older ones.

my friend told me to choose the quiet program in segundo so that way i could b placed in regan and have a quiet place to live in. although a quiet place is never a bad thing, would you guys recommend it? cuz i do want the true dorm life experience, but then again, i am premed so it could b helpful living in a more quiet area (im not saying that its completely quiet). or mayb im jus overthinkin? lol

bumppppppppppppppppppppppppp

No matter where you choose to live there will be quiet hours instated. I would opt to just go with a non-themed dorm so that you have the option to blast music before quiet hours (11 PM Sun-Thu, 2AM Fri-Sat). If you really need peace and quiet, you can just hop over to the library on campus and start studying. Plus, you’ll probably want to be there so your bed won’t distract you (having an accessible bed within your vicinity = potential unwanted naps…haha).
