Dorm room layout

Hey, has anyone found photos of room layouts; where? Specifically, I'm wondering about how the south doubles (crown house) look. And, do the doubles have 2 closets? Thanks!

S’s double in South was a pretty typical dorm room. Two closets, two beds, two desks, two dressers, etc. One person on one side, the other on the other. It wasn’t completely square–the desks were in a little nook under a huge window with a nice view.

Do you know approximately how many sq feet they had?

I’d say 150-200 sf. dd is very happy in South even though the lady’s room is on the floor below. she is going to stay there for another year.

this is kinda old but may be useful.

@artloversplus, thanks! Wow — seems odd they wouldn’t have a BR on the same floor for the girls. Are any of the BR’s/shower rooms coed? 150 - 200 sq ft for 2 sounds like plenty of non-cramped space to me!

@bubbles, thanks! I had seen that but was hoping for a more recent view. I had hoped UChi had layout pics available somewhere on their site. Many colleges have pics w/ layouts per floor & then iindividual room layouts. It would come in handy.

I hope all the rooms have plenty of windows — I would think natural light would be a must since it gets dark so early in the winter.

I’ve been in one South double (so I’m not sure if it’s representative of all of them), but the view/windows were fantastic, so you’ll be getting plenty of sunlight!

S is also going back to South, this time in a single, chosen to be on the same floor as the male bathroom. He also had to go to another floor last year.

They take a vote about whether to make the bathrooms coed. It has to be unanimous. Not sure if this is per floor or per house. I think this was a poor choice in an otherwise very well thought out design for a dorm. They have one huge bathroom per floor–I can’t imagine why they didn’t make two smaller ones instead.

I’m pretty sure all the rooms have big windows. The ones on the higher floors, on the outside facing east have fantastic views. Some face into a courtyard, though.

So from the sound of it, the BR’s were previously voted on & designated male or female; they don’t vote on it again at the beginning of each year? Wow, sounds like it was a poor choice in not building out 2 BR’s per floor.

My understanding is UChi guarantees housing all 4 years. What do they do when a kid takes off a quarter to do a study abroad —will the kid have a room to come back to?

In “South”, I think odd floor bathrooms are for men and even floors are for ladies. Those bathrooms are for the “house” and they are big, enough to handle 10-15 at a time with showers. each floor is co-ed, but the bathrooms are not. You can demand to be on the same floor with same sex bathrooms, but you have to ask for it.

The South is huge, there are many “houses”.

I think they vote on whether the bathrooms should be coed at the beginning of every year.

If I recall correctly (this is from an information session I went to at some point) students who take a study abroad are guaranteed a room when they come back, but whatever is available–not necessarily in the desired dorm or room. However, if you can arrange something yourself, like there are three of you who are planning study abroad in different quarters so that two are always on campus and one away, they’d let the three of you share a double.
