My dorm roommate is moving out next semester and I was informed that I won’t have another roommate for next semester. I was wondering what I can do with the extra stuff that will be in there (bed, desk, and Night stand). They won’t be able to move the extra stuff out and also I can’t loft the other bed because it cost $250 through the college. I don’t want the room to look empty. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do?
You will need to keep your stuff on your side of the room. Since you are paying the rate for a double the college will retain the right to move someone in mid-semester should the need arise. You just need to get over the fact that the room will look a bit empty
Different colleges are more strict than others about staying on “your side”. Ask your RA. Can you put an extra blanket (like an inexpensive fleece) and a couple throw pillows on the bed so friends can sit on it? Maybe put a plant on the desk (making sure you don’t let water leak from it and stain the desk). I’d make sure it is very easy/quick to remove what you do, since someone else might move in with no notice.
Make the bed and it will look like someone else lives there (or you can have guests). I’d use the other things like boo cases or desks, but put things that will be easy to move if someone does move in. If you want to rearrange the furniture, make an L shaped bed or desks in another place, go ahead.
You literally might be in class or away for the weekend when someone shows up. And as mentioned above, some schools are VERY adamant that you can’t keep anything on the other half of the room. So you should check with your RA. Fully making the bed might not be a great idea.
My daughter was in a similar situation but she knew no one was moving in. Her roommate was a study abroad student and she knew was not going to be there the full year. She used the other bed as a couch as suggested. She used the desk for her plants and stuff… She enjoyed actually having a large single.
She actually had friends stay over etc.
I would find out if the school has any intention of someone moving in and ask to be notified prior so you can be prepared.
A few throw pillows can make that spare bed into your couch… and are easy enough to remove if someone does move it. Get a nice big comforter for it, and it will make a nice study space for you.
The extra dresser?? More room for you. And, again, easy enough to empty out if things change.
I agree with the above…assume anyone could move in at any time. Don’t use the dresser/shelves/closet but maybe put a throw blanket and a couple of pillows on the other bed.
