Dorm Roommates

What are your opinions and/or experiences with dorm roommates? Do you think it's better to take a chance with a stranger, and maybe get a roommate you don't get aong with, or room with a friend and risk a good relationship? Since the housing application doesn't ask many questions, only if you study with music or if you are an early riser. If you do study with music, do they assign you a room with someone else who also studies with music? What if you like different music? I don't think they can "match" you up very well based on those questions.

College is a place to expand your network, to be able to experience different people’s lives and values. Obviously if you pair with a stranger, chances are you will be paired with someone you wouldn’t hang out with otherwise.

If it’s that bad, you can always get a roommate transfer, and more often than not, you get to move out.

Random roommates are definitely characters

It’s the luck of the draw haha.

I was placed in a room randomly and the guy I was roomed with is now my best friend. On the flip-side I have a friend who was roomed with a creep and he just moved to another room.

yea random is always fun

Also, do you find out who your roommate is during Orientation? Like, do you have time to ummm “get to know them” via email, phone, etc? Or is it truly “you move in and here’s a perfect stranger” kind of deal?

9/10 people have facebook. That’s how most people I know found their roommate before they moved in.

Well once you get his/her name you can search for it under the student directory and find whatever contact details they made public (i.e., AIM, email address, etc.). That’s what I plan on doing since I have yet to make the switch from MySpace to FB.

you find out your roommate via mail AFTER orientation, it has their name address and phone number. Just facebook them

Alright thank you  im excited about learning what dorm I get and what kind of roommate I have.

Dnerd, you should really think about switching over to facebook. It really seems as if it’s replacing myspace, at least in the socializing department…

That’s what I keep hearing, but more of my current friends use MySpace over FB so I guess I just haven’t been inspired yet. But I’m going to try to have my girlfriend make me a FB account or at least set it up.

As a side note… many (if not most) clubs at FSU organize through facebook.

FSU is pretty good about room transfers–If by some horrible unlucky chance you end up with the devil as a roommate. I’d advise going random.
