Any stories about dorm experience at UCSD? Any advice?

I could tell you some amusing stories (not necessarily at SD) involving axes, vomit, being high, not being on speaking terms, verbal abuse, blasting music, odd sex, theft, etc., but it’s not representative of the average roommate experience.

The truth is, you might hear more bad stories than good stories, but only because the bad ones are more interesting. The vast majority of people have decent, or at least tolerable roommates. My advice is to be level-headed, tolerant and willing to negotiate. Don’t sweat it too much. Just go with the flow.

talk to your roommates before moving in about what to bring and stuff.
And dont let first impressions ruin everything.
And dont beat around the bush for things, one of the very first things my roommate asked was “you dont sleep naked, right?”, which totally got that out of the way. I mean you guys are going to be living for each other for at least a year, so theres no real point in hiding anything, or being afraid of asking awkward questions.

Asking awkward questions>having awkward situations later on

When do you find out who your roommate is?

rather late. end of august or beginning of september?

ucsd will email you all the rough dates and stuff later.

@justmyview… very good advice I suppose I’ll just have to go into the situation optimistically and hope for the best.

@LordMango…I see what you’re saying…but due to the fact that I’m a girl, I don’t think I’ll have to worry about a naked sleeping roommate lol

But I have a question: For co-ed dorms, do you have boys rooms on the same floor as girls…or are they on a different floor in the building?

^Most floors have both girls and guys suites.

Which do you guys suggest? Co-ed or just all-girl/boy?

every suite/apartment is single-sex … although i remember muir having the option of combined genders for some apt housing

I recommend joining your college’s facebook group for freshmen, I actually met my roommate on there and we are still best friends to this day.

hmm good advice! Do you know whether we find out who are roommate is in August or September?

It’s usually very late august or very early september. move in is around the 3rd week of September, my year I found out my roommate on like August 29th/30th and move in was Sept 20th. (weird that i remember that?)
