Inter-gender relations in Dorms

My mom has been extremely hesistant with regard to me living in dorms, so would anyone be able to answer these questions for me?

Does UCSD automatically assign a student with same gender suitemates? For example, does a suite have only 8-12 girls or 8-12 boys and all room mates are the same sex? or is it mixed - boys and girls living in the same suite or room?

All other questions I have are dependent on the question above. (my mom and I are STILL arguing over this)

Thanks to anyone in advance.

I know for Warren, the suites are single sexed, so it's 10 girls for a suite (or 10 boys).

Yes, suites and apartments are segregated by sex. The housing is coed in the sense that different genders are in the same buildings/floors.

Yes it is pretty segregated by sex that each gender has their own bathrooms, showers, etc.

Okay, great, that's what I kept telling my mom, but I figured the buildings would be coed so my second question is

Are there usually a lot of girls/guys hanging in eachother's suites? i.e. free mixing etc. Is there a curfew during which you can no longer visit anyone else's dorm and have to stay in your own?

I remember showing my mom a tour of Muir halls and when she saw this pic http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v175/SiLentGigguLz/lounge.jpg, that's when the arguing began...(girls/guys in the same suite) I'm a Muslim girl and I wear a scarf so that is why it would be very awkward if a guy walked in while I wasn't wearing it. I'm hopefully getting a single, but I would like to know whether there would be a lot of guys visiting (meaning I'd have to either cover up 24/7 or lock myself in my room)

Unfortunately there are no curfew-type situations, excepting loosely-enforced noise curfews... and mingling does happen late into the night some times.

I would suggest an on-campus apartment... it is the only way to be sure that no one can enter the "common area" of your residence without your knowledge. The dorm common areas are locked at night, but I wouldn't count on one of your other suitemates letting your know someone was there; with the apartment you might be able to swing a little bit more communication with your apartmentmates.

Also there are obviously other Muslim girls at UCSD... I would suggest talking to residential life about it, perhaps they have a solution.

Thanks mruser...that just about answers all of my questions. I found a topic regarding apartments that pretty much described the differences (res halls having more people going in and out, while apartments are pretty quiet) The only thing preventing me from getting an apartment would be if the price for a single room is higher (?) and if my apartment-mates would have the sink pile up regularly

Thanks again to all who answered :)

People mingle.
