Dorm Telephones

All dorm rooms come with a telephone right? Can we make free long-distance calls on them?

can u come up with any more random questions? lol

I have no clue as to the answer to your question sorry.

NO DOMRS HAVE PHONES OR TV’S IN THE DORM ROOMS! PERHAPS THE LOBBIES? idk. (:

Dorm rooms come with a phone (at least they did when I was there)…but almost nobody used it because there is no free long distance and you have to pay for voicemail service. I never used my dorm phone…stuck with my cell phone.

is only for local calls. if you want long distance on it, you have to sign up for a provider, you will get a bill. most kids arrive with a cell phone. verizon works best in North Campus. if you serch on this forum there will be alot of discussion last year, and the year before and the year before that saying verizon is the best. you will end up using your phone to call home, and set up your socila plans on campus. my son graduated in 07 my daughter is a current student and the difference between their years was TEXT MESSAGING…my daughter does most of her scheduling on texting - we added unlimited texting a week after dropping her off. your area code almost doesn’t matter with free long distance so go over this with your parents…

yeah I’m not even sure if my room phone is plugged in, one is provided though.

I live in Vancouver, Canada, so I have no experience with US carriers.

Which plan do you recommend that I get and how much per month will it cost?

I would bring a cheap, old fashion phone for your room. It will work in case of a black out(typical mom). I used to have long conversations with my daughter via her room phone because it sounded better than her cell phone, it also saved her cell phone minutes. But I guess skype would work just as well now.

ah don’t get a phone carrier, why the hell would you need one, its a waste of money. Just use your cellphone and or skype, and oldfort they provide you with a room phone, you don’t need to supply your own. If you meant cellphone carriers get verizon since it works the best in ithaca and most people have it, plus all calls to other verizon phones are free(don’t use up minutes at least). Get a plan with some amunt of texting depending on how much you text(it is incredibly useful for arranging things in college, so expect to text more than you currently do)

Not in my d freshman dorm. She had to bring her own phone. I always have an old fashion phone around just in case if electricity should go out. Often when there is an emergency cell phones do not work. We live too close to NYC that 911 really made an impact on us.

Go to Verizon for mobile service (get unlimited text plan) and contact back home to Canada using computer based Internet service such as Skype.

My daughter was in Dickson last year. A phone was in her dorm room. Free incoming calls. You paid for outgoing calls. She always used her cell phone. Verizon is best followed by ATT which she had.

I can’t remember the exact wording but I think some of the recent info we received said that most dorms were having room phone service phased out…definitely doublecheck if you weren’t planning on a cell phone.

Yeah, I’ve heard Verizon works best on the campus…

Verizon and ATT will probably cost you more than other carriers, but it’s because of the coverage they also provide you with, which balances it out for some people.

Just visit their official websites for monthly costs, and it usually varies depending on your needs. Unlimited texting, family plans, and Internet all change the cost of your bill, so depending on which ones you need and which you don’t need, your monthly cost will vary.

Since you’re from Canada, and you aren’t worrying about which carriers work best on campus and stuff, here are a few popular phone carriers:

T-Mobile
Verizon
ATT
Sprint

Here’s a review on them, helps a lot:

LAND LINE service will be phased out…it will no longer exist on north campus…and will disappear from west soon after…

CIT will be providing a voice over IP telephone service though (not sure about the details)

oh and ATT is installing antennas on campus:
