Hey everyone!
I just have a few questions
I was just wondering what the greek life at UC boulder is. I’m a girl, so is it necessary to join a sorority to have a good social life? If so, is it hard to get into certain sororities.
Also, what is the freshman housing process like? Should I find a roommate over facebook, or is the housing department good with matching people together? How late can I apply for housing without getting stuck in a “bad” dorm thats far away from campus?
Thanks! sorry for all the questions, I’m just super overwhelmed!
First, take a deep breath. Remember everyone else is going through the same process and there isn’t a single, right answer. Its a journey, not a destination.
It isn’t necessary to go Greek. The majority of students are NOT in greek life. Every sorority has it’s own culture. Some are more focused on parties and others on academics. While the greek system can provide you with a home base and a built-in friendship group, there are downsides as well. There is a fair amount of pressure to participate in sorority activities even if they conflict with academics (fines for not attending house events) and you are required to live in the house your sophomore year. Many girls are ready to get away from that kind of drama after their first year. There is a vibrant social life outside of Greek life. And you don’t have to decide now. You can get more information once you arrive on campus.
You should fill out your housing choices ASAP. Although notifications haven’t been sent out yet, many of the halls are already over-requested - particularly those in the middle of campus. Those also tend to be the loudest and more party-oriented dorms. The Kitt area fills next and Willville fills up last. But there aren’t really any bad choices. Take a look at the RAP and hall websites and facebook pages, That should give you some sense of the character of each hall.
There will be a huge rush of housing requests after new student day. If you haven’t made a request by mid-April, the odds increase that you will be in Willville.
Roommate requests will be honored until early April. After that, they will match you. I don’t think the CU process is any better or worse than other places. And a lot of those who picked their own roommate based on a few messages back and forth fail miserably. It’s better to go with the housing match than pick someone simply because you are both from the same state or like the same music.
Yes. New student day is the decision day for lots of students. You can sign up for a hall that day. Or do it as soon as you get home. But I wouldn’t wait much past that day unless you want to be in Willville. And, again, there is nothing wrong with Willville. It has it’s own rec center, dining and social activities. The bus may even make it faster to get to class than living in Kitt.
