On-campus (Greek life) or off campus? University of Nebraska

Hey! I got accepted to UNL a while back for undergraduate fall 2015 and I’ve applied as an INTERNATIONAL student as I do not live in the US. So I was just wondering, would it be a good decision to apply for sorority recruitment? Or would it be best for me to stay in the residents hall? And what if I decided to live off campus, would that be a good idea or no?

Please keep in mind that I will be attending UNL as an International student

Thanks!

If you’re interested in a sorority, go through recruitment and decide if it’s something you want to participate in. Also know that there are other sororities including the multicultural greek council and NPHC (you can read about them on UNL’s website) which do not participate in formal recruitment.

I would strongly advise living in the dorms as a freshman so you can meet a variety of people, not just those in greek life or your classes.

Thanks for you reply! Will I be able to join a sorority after my freshman? Also, once I go to the recruitment, I could still change my mind and not not go for Greek life right?

Yes but some chapters make it more difficult for sophomores and juniors to join (very often they have specific, low quotas for the number of non freshmen they allow in) although others don’t care. If you go through recruitment and decide not to join Greek life, that’s fine. Think of recruitment as if it’s a series of in person college applications. You do your best to woo the chapters and the chapters do their best to woo you. Like with college however, you don’t have to go even if you get “accepted” (in this case a bid) by multiple sororities.
