Dorms - Air conditioning?

We see where DD's dorm (Dickinson) doesn't have airconditioning - can any students who have lived there share their experiences? Early September and late May can get quite warm at times - how warm do the rooms get in the evenings / night? Are fans a viable option?

My son was a freshman last year in Russell and it did get hot the first few weeks of September. He actually had 2 fans, one medium sized one which he put in front of the window, and one smaller one he used by his bed. He rented a loft, so the fan by the window didn't make it up that high. May was not as bad. By the way, move-in day was extremely hot, so we got there early. We were supposed to arrive in the afternoon based upon where we live, but no one said anything or turned us away.

DEFINITELY get a fan!!! D and roommate had two window fans, and with both on the room was almost bearable. And like Mattmoosemom, I can recommend getting there early. Not only do you get moved in during the cool part of the day, but once in you have a chance to run out for any items your student may have neglected to bring. (It's also great fun watching fellow parents lugging stuff up stairwells during the heat of the day! And if you feel just a little bit guilty doing this, you can always volunteer to help.)

For the air conditioned residence halls: can the students turn on the AC at any time or is the ac turned on at a specific date?

you can turn it on at anytime. its in your room below the window. same with the heat
