Ok so I'm planning on going to IU next fall, and am looking at which neighbourhood to choose (Im thinking NW or Central). I've heard that the Southeast is pretty boring and am wondering if thats still true. Also I was wondering about Collins it looks pretty cool but I've heard that it has a reputation for attracting people who are "different" which I don't know is a good or bad thing. So if you could give me more info on Collins that would be great.

NW is closest to the stadium, fraternity houses, and gym. Going to be a decent walk or bus ride to some of your first year classes though which might get annoying .

Central may be the best in terms of location since its right in the middle.

South East is farthest from the stadium but in a pretty good location for walking distance to your classes. Forest, Rose, and Willkie are some nice dorms too. They just built a new cafeteria in Forest which is also a plus.

Just my 2 cents

We’ve heard NW is for Partiers, Central is for serious students… Collins = hipsters.

If you’re going to be spending a lot of time in Kelley, SPEA, Geology, Psych, or Informatics…Northwest might be a good place for you. If you are going to be spending most of your time on 3rd street, you’ll have to take a bus or a 30 minute walk when it’s nice out. Central isn’t exactly convenient to 3rd either, but it’s less of a hike

Based upon my daughter’s experience this year, McNutt there are many loud, obnoxious, destructive, intolerant people that live there. Many have pledged. Recently a friend of hers had ■■■ written on some art work he had on his door. Just so happens this friend came out recently. It seems, sadly, that this is the culture of McNutt. She loves eating at Collins and has met great people there. Just very sad to know that in 2014 university students are still that uninformed, disrespectful and intolerant.

nwislp I realize from your several posts that IU has not turned out to be what your daughter had expected. I am a high school senior who has applied to IU so I dont have first hand experience. Just like you my information has come from a family member, my brother. I dont think you can make a sweeping generalization about all the students who live in the Northwest neighborhood nor everyone that has chosen to join a sorority or fraternity. I am sorry that your daughter, and her friend, have found McNutt an unwelcoming environment. Why does she not move to Collins? You have posted that she has made friends and likes to eat there. Perhaps IU is just not the place for her and she would be more comfortable at a smaller school.

Collins kids are weird. My friends and I eat there sometimes and we stick out like sore thumbs, and the kids there aren’t very accepting of normal college kids. If money isn’t an issue then I would highly suggest paying the extra money and living in Briscoe. Nicest dorms in either the Northwest or Central neighborhoods. The new dorms in Rose in the Southeast are also very nice. I currently live in Briscoe and it doesn’t live up to its party name. It might get loud on some weekends, but even then it’s still incredibly easy to study or sleep. Kids are going to be loud on weekends no matter the dorm. Briscoe has lounges galore and you’ll have no problem finding someone to study.

booklover I am an IU alumni, I lived in the dorms for two years and in a sorority house for two years. I have a son who is a senior at IU graduating in May. He has been accepted into Law school at IU so may be there for another 3 years I have first hand experience with regard to IUB. My daughter had to live at McNutt due to the program she was admitted through. She will be living at Collins next year. I realize I may have made some sweeping generalizations regarding the actions of relatively few individuals. I think I was just shocked that in 2014 young adults are so intolerant and ignorant to the feelings of others.
