hey everyone, I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about freshman dorms at kent. how big are they? what furniture are you allowed to bring? are there any triples? thanks
Hi @takeouts432. I believe the dorm rooms are all fairly standard size, leaning towards large. I don’t think there are any triples for freshman, but a quick call to the admissions office could confirm. As for what furniture is included, items to bring, and items which are not allowed, please refer to the new student registration link sent a few weeks ago and scroll to the Additional Information section. It has everything you are looking for.
They’ve shuffled around the freshman dorms in recent years. I’m not sure where they land now but a few years ago they moved freshman girls into Hoerle which is the newest dorm and until then had been a prized dorm for juniors and seniors. The rooms there are larger. Triples in all the dorms were typically for upper classmen by request and limited in number. The other dorms have fairly standard (by which I mean leaning small) dorm rooms of varying ages. My kid, class of '17, lived in 3 different dorms. In one room he could barely fit a butterfly chair, in another a small couch and in the third they managed a large futon/couch and a small couch (but that was in a triple in Hoerle after bunking their beds three high and stacking two dressers on top of each other. If the drive isn’t too onerous, I’d suggest taking the lay of the land before bringing too much stuff. If your kid ends up in one of the older dorms, some of the rooms will not allow for much creativity, furnishing wise. If there is room you can always bring other stuff during the next visit.
I know nothing about Kent dorms, but the following statement applies to all boarding school (and college) dorms: Don’t bring any furniture until you are actually in the room with all your stuff (and your roommate’s stuff) and can assess what (if any) room is left over.
thanks!
