Dorms at USC

Maybe they'll be renovating the Radisson or returning it to just being a hotel? Who knows? Will be interesting to find out, someday.

USC is expecting to have 2000 new beds available for Fall 2009, so these may be replacing the Raddison ones.

There are most definitely not 2000 more beds by Fall 09. Gateway isn't scheduled to open until 2010 and it still might not be USC managed. There aren't any other buildings under construction.

As far as I know the old Conquest properties will be USC managed, but assigned separately.

Freshmen are guaranteed on campus housing right? If they are not offering Radisson next year, then I guess it follows that sophs and juniors will have less of a chance to get on campus housing. Or are sophs also guaranteed on campus? I don't know how many students were housed at Radisson.

The Sample speech quoted by someone in another thread led to the impression that there would be more beds available. I am not positive.

My understanding is that rising freshmen and sophomores are guaranteed housing & everyone else has to cross their fingers and/or look elsewhere.

I am guessing that perhaps USC wants the Radisson available as a hotel with more rooms for guests visiting USC. For example, there was a waiting list at the Radisson for the family week-end in October which led my husband to stay at the Bonaventure downtown.

Freshmen are guaranteed housing, not necessarily on campus. I would imagine they will put freshmen in Century which is an apartment style building directly across the street from campus. Sophomores are also guaranteed housing, mostly off campus though.

As far as Juniors and Seniors, they will have a difficult time getting housing if they are in a group of 3 or more, but if they are in a smaller group or single they should get space, even if they end up on the waitlist.

Being very familiar with the housing situation at 'SC, I'm confident there won't be more housing in Fall 09. The information from Sample's speech might have had the year wrong.

I live in Parkside Arts and Humanities if anyone has questions.

Hey I just got my acceptance today (yay) and I'm wanting to know if there's a dorm that alot of girls who rush live in? I'm planning on rushing a sorority, and want a social dorm.

Also, do some dorms not have air conditioning? (and if so how do you survive?)

Finally, should I send in my housing right now, or wait till I go to visit for a scholarship interview before I make my decision? I'm from out of state, so I want to make sure I can get in somewhere where I'll fit in well. I'm definately social, but I'm still very focused on my schoolwork...

Congrats, marie!

It seems New/North (2 dorms, interconnected) have a lot of social kids and many do rush. They are not the newest dorms, and alas, not air-conditioned.

Parkside's 2 dorms are newest and have a/c. The others are survivable with fans, I hear.

If the housing site is active and will allow you to register, go for it. I believe it costs you a $30 deposit (which you won't get back), but puts you in line for first choice of housing down the road. Why not get into the best spot for that? And you'll have lots of time to figure where you want to request. Have you checked on FB? Often there are groups of USC applicants/new accepts and they talk about roommates, dorms, etc.

About 80% of New/North will rush, so you are sure to be in a very social location. However, that means that it may be difficult to actually study in the dorm.

There are only a few weeks where not having air conditioning is bad. In general, fans suffice. Most dorms don't have air conditioning, you get used to it.

what would you reccommend as ranking for second, third, fourth, and fifth on my housing application if I put New/North as first?

As madbean says, you can reserve your spot if the housing allows it at this early date, .. I believe you will have to choose your preference. At Explore (scholarship interview dates) you will get a better idea of the housing choices but once you are registered you can change your mind without losing your priority. Even if you wait till Explore you will still have a great priority date. Birnkrant is extremely popular too if you want a socially active dorm.

As for AC, Parkside Arts and Humanities, and IRC have suite configurations and AC, and lots there also rush. But Parkside is more isolated from where the social action is and further away from fraternity row.

Marie.....Birnkrant, New/North, Pardee are all in the same general area.

New and North are designated as two different dorms so that would count as two choices. There is also a choice of each with and without a sink. (Sinks are very nice but a little more expensive.) So, for some who want NEW/NORTH, this could be the first four choices:
1. NEW with sink
2. NORTH with sink
3. NEW without sink
4. NORTH without sink

is pardee fairly social? And is there really much of a different between new and north? (ie which should I put first?)

Thank you all for all your help! That's awesome that I can change my mind if i visit and still retain priority!

My S was happy with Pardee--their Great Outdoors floor (with the girls' GO floor) went camping and hiking and skiing; most of it was paid for from fees already paid to USC. I believe they have also gone surfing in other years, depends on the individuals in the dorm. He found it very convenient to have a washer/dryer on each floor of the dorm.

There is absolutely no difference between New and North. They are differentiated by a line of paint on the wall.

I'm currently living in Fluor Tower and I'm surprised it's not getting more love, :) .

The suites are larger than those in Parkside, with a couch, armchair, table/chairs as well as a kitchenette. As someone coming from the Northeast, the A/C was a godsend. I used it into November and even turned it on a few weeks ago when we went through a heat spell. Because you have huge common rooms/bathrooms, the actual dorms are a little small but the extra amenities make up for it tenfold.

The only complaint I heard from people about Fluor was the location ("far" from the quad, other freshman doors, etc.) but in actuality I lucked out since it's so close to the new cinema building. IMO, Fluor is definitely worth it for the space and A/C, not to mention it's right next to the gym and Cafe 84!

My daughter is in one of those dorms that don't have a/c but she would not trade it for anything and she originally thought of selecting Fluor tower because of a/c. How did she deal with it when it was so hot? One day, she went to sleep with a pack of ice on her head.

avoid.. trojan hall (the honors hall or whatever its called). It looks like prison and the rooms are tiny.

Birnkrants pretty good :)
